Jerry Leger has a thing for ghosts. The Toronto singer/songwriter confirmed it a couple of years ago when he went on a personal journey to explore many of Ontario’s largely unknown ghost towns, having been inspired by the writings of historian Ron Brown. Leger has immortalized one of those towns, Burchell Lake, on his new album Time Out For Tomorrow, containing 10 portraits of the impermanence of life, love, or simply catching a glimpse of a shooting star.

Indie-folk/neo-vaudeville band, Dirty Mae, have premiered their new single, “Brown Water,” via TrunkSpace. Inspired by the Flint Water Crisis, the third track released from their upcoming debut album, Holy Mama (out September 13), is an earnest response to the growing anxiety around pollution and climate change.
“The lyrics are about what the earth would tell us if it could talk now,” explains Dirty Mae’s Robbie Frost (vocals/keys/guitar/songwriter). “The instrumentation and melody at the beginning give you a nostalgic feeling as if the earth misses how things used to be. The song builds and builds until it hits a climax with [Ben Curtis’s] screaming vocals and distorted guitar. Each time through the chorus, we add a new vocal harmony until we hit another climax. Then to end it, we go back the funky, more uplifting intro because we like happy endings and like to imagine there’s still a chance to take care of this planet.”
