Mortimer reflects, “Lightning is a song I wrote for my wife and I wanted the video to stay true to that. The video features my wife and our children towards the end. I wanted the vibe to feel as natural as possible, with the person I feel naturally comfortable with and around. That person who has been there for me all these years through thick and thin, ups and downs, frowns and laughter. This video is dedicated to her.”

Robin Williams’ son, Zak, participated in an online Q & A last Wednesday with the mental health chat community 18percent.

How he coped with his dad’s death
Well I was very traumatized after my Dad’s death and found that teaching financial literacy in prison helped me heal and cope with the trauma. After that I found that being vulnerable and open about my struggles seemed to actually help others. So I just kind of kept on doing it. I love it as I find it healing personally.

Movies with his dad he loves the most
Good Morning Vietnam, The Fisher King, Aladdin

Why he’s become a mental health advocate and how he honors his dad
I decided to become an advocate because I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression personally. Found myself self-medicating and generally unhappy so when it came to speaking about my and my family struggles personally it just sort of clicked. In terms of honoring him personally I have an eleven week old son so at this point it mainly involves being a present father.”

On dealing with crippling depression
I found that the first fix for me was to learn how to not self-medicate. I was masking the pain with alcohol often and that just made things worse. Eating well and getting outdoors around nature is also really helpful for me. If self-medication isn’t an issue then finding opportunities to connect with people is helpful. Also, exercise!

In the words of A.Swayze & the Ghosts: “We have exchanged honesty, beauty, ugliness, boredom–reality–for an abstract museum inside a digitised screen, curated by big business but sustained by us. We have volunteered to pace the halls blindly, loudly. We are promised the pain of life will numb. We are given a rule for everything. We submit, we succeed. We do not feel; we do not need to anymore. We have accepted the prison and adorned the uniforms under the guise of convenience. We have connected and now we will consume.”

The idea to regroup for a new album was inspired by the energy of their 2011-2012 reunion shows, as the trio rediscovered the joy of playing together and observed the fervent reactions of their fans. The reunion shows were the spark they needed to start recording again, but from there, it was a slow and deliberate process. “By the end of 2012 we had four songs done,” recalls Waronker. “In 2013, we had a few more. We needed time to let it grow into what it would become. Sometimes it’s hard to get there. Which is kind of the theme of the album.”
