Kendra Amalie shares a new video for “Stay Low”

“I wrote Stay Low in 2012 while living in the Pacific Northwest, reflecting on a whirlwind of adventures, fleeting friendships, and unlikely exchanges on my half-year journey there. I shot the video at ground zero of inspiration in June 2019 with a good friend I’d met seven years before. It’s just a simple song about caring for strangers.

Attend to the welfare of the world, starting with surroundings as immediate your own body, then beyond. Family, friends, neighbors, community, country, continent, world, maybe even the universe and higher dimensions. Sometimes you just have to be where you are and listen to what people have to say. If they don’t have anything to say, listen anyway.”

Those four words – I’ll be back someday – also reverberate as a hint of the full-circle nature of their ninth studio album. While revisiting their teen years for their first memoir, High School – which will be published by MCD X FSG (USA) in hardcover, ebook and audiobook on September 24 – Tegan and Sara discovered two cassette tapes containing their very first songs, written between the ages of 15 and 17. With Hey, I’m Just Like You, set for release on September 27, Tegan and Sara return to the songs contained on those 1990s cassettes and reinvent them.

Vic Mensa/93PUNX “3 Years Sober” video

Rapper/singer/activist Vic Mensa has shared a video for “3 Years Sober,” a Travis Barker produced single by his new band 93PUNX. The jaw-dropping, expectation-subverting video, directed by Vic and Franc Fernandez, is rich with visual references to John Waters, To Wong Foo With Love…, Twin Peaks, and more. States Mensa, “The ‘3 Years Sober’ video is a statement about identity. I put on a confederate flag dress to be able to laugh at a symbol of hate, and played tug of war with Mike Pence over birth control. I had my face written on to get ahead of everything I know people will say about me and had a diner full of BBQ Becky’s call the police on me for using the women’s bathroom. I know some in hip hop culture will see this and say ‘Vic’s gay’ (which I’m not), whereas if I was white they’d just say ‘he’s a rockstar.’ 93PUNX is about being yourself, fuck what people think.”
