Gisli – “The Skeleton Crew” – New Album

Gisli last full-length album came out on EMI Records around 15 years ago. ‘How About That’ was released to an almost unanimous critical acclaim and Gisli spent the following years touring with his Norwegian band. Gisli went to Los Angeles to write and record his second album but took a break from his solo career and never released the finished album. But it’s not like he hasn’t been active in music since that time, recording, producing and writing for other people like Duffy, Mick Jones (The Clash), Anja Garbarek, and Cathy Dennis to name only a few, as well as releasing the odd solo song here and there, plus a collection of songs last year with Norwegian artist William Hut on Norwegian label Appollon Records.

Kara Connolly for Skope Mag

“Let Me Go” is a coming of age anthem with a powerful message surrounding being true to yourself and forging your own path despite what others may want or think. Kara addresses codependency, pulls away from the paralyzing and gripping expectations of others (as well as her own fearful thoughts), and steps into the autonomy of being herself and confidently making her own decisions despite what anyone else, even those closest to her, may say or think.

The melodies are as playful as the lyrics which describes a silly, almost tickling feeling and therefor the name of the song is “Ridiculous” The genre is pop with influences of reggaetón dance beats. The song has got really catchy melodies and a falsetto to die for in the chorus.

Produced by Rob Kirwan (Hozier, PJ Harvey, Local Natives, Editors, The Horrors) ‘Find the Water’ sees the band move into new musical territory, as lead singer Danny O’Reilly explains:

“Musically ‘Find the Water’ is unlike anything we’ve done before – melodically; the vocal delivery; even the arrangement is unusual for us, but yet it was one of those songs where we were all on the same page right from the start and it came together very quickly, which is always a good sign.
