“I wrote the song thinking about a couple people who haven’t been in my life for a long time, but I looked up to,” shared Thomas. “I imagined them seeing me now and wondered if all the decisions I had made amounted to something worthy of their respect. The idea behind the song came from thinking about if I had to explain why I’d been the way I am for so long, as though one would be on trial for the person they’ve become.” Written as a reflection on change, Thomas looks back at how time and bad decisions alter self-identity, and how those closest to you see those changes.

Dallas Artist FXXXXY Swears Off Relationships in a Single-Life Slow Jam

Dallas artist FXXXXY has a versatile approach behind the mic and behind the boards, able to craft hard-nosed rap and sweetly sung R&B in equal measure. Leaning into melody atop a luscious self-produced backing track, FXXXXY shares “Staying Single.” Though it resembles an R&B slow jam, “Staying Single” turns the concept on its head, as FXXXXY isn’t describing romantic love, but declaring his intentions to give it up entirely. Reverberating with pitched-down vocal samples and screeching synths, the single finds the Interscope signee deciding to get his mind right by taking time for himself. Premiered by Dirty-Glove Bastard, “Staying Single” represents the conclusion of FXXXXY’s thought process in “Self Care,” his piano-laden previous single, as he abandons emotional attachment and all the pain that comes with it.

The album was recorded in Nashville, Alexander’s adopted hometown, along with producer and recording engineer Brendan St. Gelais and mixing engineer Mark Petaccia (Jason Isbell, Lindi Ortega).
