Calan Mai Premieres New Single

Calan Mai, the moniker of singer-songwriter Jordan Lawrence, has released the new single, “We’ve Got Love,” after premiering the song on PopMatters. The single release precedes his debut performance at SXSW, where he is an official artist. At first listen, the tune sounds like a carefree piece of folk-pop, but on closer observation, the track’s intricate lyricism and detailed storytelling reveal a more heavy-hearted sensibility. “Each verse is about a different family member and everything they were going through at the time,” says Lawrence, noting that “We’ve Got Love” touches on his brother’s drug addiction and his father’s gambling problem. He adds that the sonic tone isn’t entirely paradoxical. “I wrote that song about the fact that even though all these things worry and upset me, I’ve never been made to feel unloved or unwanted-so in that way, I’m really very lucky,” he says.

Carry Illinois, the Austin-based indie-pop band founded and fronted by Lizzy Lehman, has released the new single, “Runaway,” from the forthcoming EP, Work In Progress, due out later this spring. The song was produced by the band and Grant Johnson, and Lehman explains, “‘Runaway’ is about my life-long struggle with my body: how I view it, how I feel in it and how I have always hated it. Early on in their courtship, Zdan received a text from her now husband, Aaron Haynes (of The Texas Gentlemen), saying “I WANT YOUR TROUBLE.” Zdan immediately knew she had to turn that text into a song, and not just any song, but a kick you over one at that. Haynes and Zdan wrote the song together and Haynes plays drums on the track.
