Much like a prism refracts light into a colorful spectrum, guitarist Chris Standring’s “Sunlight” reflects rays of multihued jazz into a vibrant sonic palette of joy and positivity. The Los Angeles-based, native Brit will drop his twelfth album on March 23 on the Ultimate Vibe Recordings label, marking the twentieth anniversary since the release of his debut disc (“Velvet”). Paving the way for the new collection penned and produced by Standring is the jaunty “Love Street,” set to cast an alluring spell as the first radio single.
Diverse strains of jazz reign on “Sunlight” with Standring’s clean electric jazz guitar shining brightly throughout the ten tracker plus a reprise that closes the session. The prevailing sounds and engaging textures create warm, organic backdrops for his nimble fretwork forays that traverse lush rhythms and grooves. Wave after wave of Fender Rhodes keyboards and Hammond B3 organ wash over the taut beats serving as the rhythmic spine. Vintage elements offer a compelling contrast to the imaginative electronic nuances, deftly making the recordings feel retro, futuristic, experimental and visionary all at the same time while Standring’s cool-toned guitar slices through to the fore cranking out nifty licks, precision fills and impassioned melodic sojourns.

Filmed by aerial drone, “Ima Keep It Goin'” offers panoramic vistas of several sideshows, as well as panoramic vistas of The Bay Bridge and the city of Oakland. Featuring a guest verse from E-40, who contributes a typically boisterous verse (“how you call yourself a boss if you ain’t got no employees?”), the video is a succinct survey of Bay Area culture, complete with shots of block parties, dice games, and a cameo from Marshawn Lynch. “Ima Keep It Goin'” is the latest video from Withdrawl, Keak Da Sneak’s first album since 2013.
With thin, shoulder-length dreads and an irrepressible charisma, San Francisco’s Prezi is the Bay Area’s next cult superstar. Building on the momentum of the hit single “Do Better,” released after he beat a murder case by pleading self-defense, Prezi shares Do Better, a glistening collection of honest street stories. Brimming with love for his family, pride for his community, and determination to overcome his struggles, Prezi carries the mixtape with quality songwriting and detailed bars. Annihilating mob-style instrumentals with his unbreakable cadence and providing ample hooks with his sing-song flow, Prezi shines on Do Better, establishing himself as one of the most vital voices in Bay Area street rap. Featuring appearances from Mozzy, Philthy Rich, OMB Peezy, Lil Yee, Lil Blood, Tree Thomas, and Skooly, Do Better arrives today via EMPIRE.

The New Tracy Chapman: Kareen Lomax
American singer-songwriter and producer, Kareen Lomax, is an emerging young talent with an unmistakable voice. Born in the suburbs of Marietta, Georgia, her surrounding environment inspired her distinctive sound, best described as alternative-soul. Her sphere of influence spans across multiple genres and contains soothing yet rich rhythms that bear similarity to Tracy Chapman and Marc E. Bassy. With lyrics that bring her story to life, Kareen uses clever wordplay and catchy melodies to take listeners on an intimate journey.
Regarding her new single, Kareen said, “Been in Love“ came at a time in my life where I wished I was somewhere else. I’ve always thought of love as an actual place two people are in instead of just an emotion, so the concept came easily and the song wrote itself in a way.”
