John Cage’s ‘Electronic Music for Piano’ from Tania Chen

Composer John Cage (1912-1992) is one of the classical world’s best known experimental composers and theorists. Electronic Music for Piano is one of Cage’s least known pieces because the score is among his most enigmatic and, consequently, there are few commercial recordings of it. Written in Stockholm in 1964 on hotel letterhead, the notes ask the performer to select parts from Cage’s Music for Piano 4-84 and use electronic equipment. Everything else is up to the artist’s discretion.

Enter Tania Chen, the U.K.-based pianist who has become a revered and leading interpreter of Cage’s work. Recording in both London and Berkeley, California, Chen joined forces with Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), David Toop (former member of the Flying Lizards, and recording artist on Brian Eno’s Obscure label) and Jon Leidecker (a.k.a. Wobbly, who has also worked with Negativland) to create a new version of this piece helmed by composer/musician/scholar Gino Robair.

Video submission: Pro, “What What”

When asked about the inspiration behind the song, Pro said, “’What, What’ is about all the nonsense. This song is about filtering out the stuff you don’t care to hear. It is about loving what you love, and loving to disregard what you hate. ‘What, What’, in laymen’s terms, is ‘that thing’. It’s either that ‘yeah’ or that ‘no’ and it is up to the listener to determine what falls under those categories. ‘What, What’ can be the new car you bought yourself, or it can be the hater in the crowd while you are trying to perform. It is not negative or positive

“For this, I wanted to catch fragments of an odd journey through adolescent angst bathed in underlying sexual tension—a puzzle of senses and feelings flowing with gradual force, and oppressively constant,” Andrieu has explained to NOWNESS, who are premiering the video. “It’s a coming of age snapshot. Oh Geronimo Video ‘Mountains’

“Mountains” is a song about wholeheartedly pursuing your passions, while straddling the fragile line between ambition and humility. Everybody wants to be successful, and sometimes we go to great lengths to achieve the success that we so desperately desire. However, it’s important to remember to keep our egos in check. We must be kind to each other and to ourselves. It’s easy to let your goals and aspirations consume you to the point where it brings you and everyone else around you down. “Mountains” is about never giving up, whilst withstanding the pressure to compromise who we are in order to be successful.

The song is accompanied by an incredible animated video directed by Heather Rappard, involving glycerine as paint thinner and painstakingly shot in 15-second increments over the course of three weeks. “Breaking a song down into its tiniest parts actually leaves lots of room to improvise and really consider how to describe it visually,” says Rappard. “I wanted to create a video that morphed and visually changed in the same ways the song does: in the beginning, working with the bright guitar sound and the illustrative qualities of the lyrics, then moving into the abstract at the bridge’s breakdown, to the ending where it completely changes, becoming much noisier and darker with the percussion, spacey synths, and ringing guitar hits.”
