This was the first song I wrote that was inspired by the rise of Donald Trump, back in late 2015. It’s about trying to find your way forward with every economic and political force working against you and out of your control, while everyone around you gives into distraction and solace from all kinds of places, from Trump to pop music. Story-wise, it’s about Catherine coming to Detroit to become an actress, only to have the city collapse and become enthralled with a rising revolutionary that she’s not sure can be trusted.”

This track, much like the album itself, is about family and heritage, and the tension between honoring the past and embracing the future. So much of who we are is directly influenced by our inherited family culture, for better or for worse. Family teaches us how to walk, eat, judge, behave, and how to perceive and communicate with the world around us. “Who Are We” delves into the process of valuing what is beautiful in our family and cultural inheritance, while weeding out the aspects that can hold us back from growth and progress; in hopes to bestow an even greater inheritance to future generations.

Ross Goldstein’s psychedelic “Inverted Jenny” comes out on Northern Spy 8/11

Written and recorded over the course of two years in Ross’ home in the Catskill Mountains, there are audible traces of solitude and stillness everywhere on the record. An incredibly personal product of a sole creator, even when guest players came by to record additional parts, they would confer with Ross and overdub their parts in hushed one-on-one sessions, rather than more collaboratively-minded large ensemble sessions. This chapter of the already isolated process furthered the strange intimacy of the album.

Paper Monsters Utilize 3D Printing in “Red Light” Music Video

Manchester, NH natives Paper Monsters twist alternative rock and pop genres to creatively blend acoustic and electronic instrumentation. However, it is their name derivative that makes this 4 piece, consisting of Matt Blanchette (Vocals, Acoustic), Chris Kinney (Guitar), Dylan Charest (Drums), and Ryan Boehlke (Bass), stand out. The name stems from their single “Riddles” off the band’s triumphant debut EP, With Riddles, released last summer. The lyrics from the song were loosely based on the Chinese Proverb translated as “Paper Tiger.” The saying is meant to call out an enemy or feared general as being made actually from paper and weak once pushed. Paper Monsters are representative of the demons we encounter in our daily lives and to remind us that they are mostly in our heads; made of paper, and that we should tear them up and throw them away. Taking this meaning one step further, Paper Monsters pieced together one of a kind paper masks using 3D printing as a staple to their brand, image, and live show performance.
