Aaron Roche shares new single / video, “Like Why I”

HaHa HuHu is the beautiful new album by Brooklyn-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Roche. Released through figureight records, the album acts as an anchor for Roche’s contrasting narratives: a singer-songwriter with an ear for the avant-garde; a contemporary composer who sings American folk music; an instrumentalist who works as a recording engineer.

Roche’s musical CV offers some insight into his craft. He performs (guitar) in the touring bands of musicians as diverse as R. Stevie Moore, Lower Dens, Sufjan Stevens and ANOHNI, he has composed music for the American Ballet Theatre, he has played trumpet with his father’s brass ensemble. Though filtered through his strange and singular lens, all these elements of sound help illuminate the musician and his vision. The album’s wistful sensitivity and heartening playfulness reveal a songwriter both mature and confident, drawn to lo-fiand droning textures, to nonstandard song-crafting, to acutely personal observation.

Eli Paperboy Reed Celebrates Fatherhood With A New Song, “Baby Girl (Stella)”

“I honestly didn’t intend to write a song about becoming a Dad. It was my general opinion that songs like that were trite, and besides, what could I say that Stevie Wonder hadn’t already said in “Isn’t She Lovely?” Then my daughter was born and, literally, everything changed. I was completely knocked sideways by her disarming smile and the way she lit up when I put on Little Richard and we danced around the living room. It was a kind of love that I had never experienced before in my whole life.

First and foremost, I’m a songwriter, so I did what I do and wrote a song about it. It’s a cheesy song, but every word of it is true. And if I wasn’t already a sucker for the schmaltzy and overwrought, becoming a father definitely didn’t help. As most of my songs do, it came fast. A simple melody, a few chords, and words jotted down on a legal pad that I keep out. After tweaking my wording and settling on chords for the bridge, I sang it for my wife and my daughter, Stella. My wife cried and Stella laughed, which is exaclty what I was hoping for.

This coming weekend will be my first Father’s Day. I don’t know how we’ll celebrate yet, but I know that I’m given the best gift I’ll ever receive when I walk into Stella’s room every morning and see her smile at me. I hope all the Dads (and Moms) new and old out there will hear this song and remember just how lucky we are.”

BLONDER x Consequence of Sound

Blonder, the performance alias of the mercurial, NYC-based singer-songwriter Constantine Anastasakis, lives and breathes elegantly yearning melodies and pop song structures. And it’s clear on his debut EP, entitled ‘$5,’ from the taut, bittersweet guitar lines and chunky synth bass running through “Lean” to the clubby New Order-esque synth stabs of “What We Want,” and the tortured guitar scrawls tearing up “Upstate” to the Teenage Dream-like chug of “In and Out.” Written in the throes of a serious relationship that was eroding for months on end, each of the five songs is a “distinct world,” says the singer-songwriter. “It’s about romance and sex, but I want people to see the whole thing, the emotional world that I was in during that time.”
