OHHMS “The Fool”

Armed with the thickest riffs and fieriest will, OHHMS formed in 2014 in Kent, UK. It didn’t take long for the five-piece to come up with two stellar EPs “Bloom” (October 2014) and “Cold” (June 2015), both released on London-based extreme music powerhouse Holy Roar Records. Clocking in at over thirthy minutes, each EP unfolds with two monolithic, angst-ridden tracks, blending the downtuned approach of doom metal with eerier and more progressive landscapes. On top of this distinctive approach in their songwriting, vocalist Paul Waller maintains maximum adrenaline levels by alternating between sumptuously deep gravelly singing, Viking-warrior bellows and roar-is-war call to arms.

“Look I love the lawn and how much fun everybody has up there,” the man who won the American Music Award for Favorite Country Album with Just As I Am acknowledges, “but I also know some of my most hardcore fans come for the music. They want to be under the roof, where they can really see and hear the show. I hate that it’s always impossible for the folks in the BG Nation, who’re trying to make ends meet, to get into those seats – so we’re teaming with Live Nation to create a Working Class ticket.”

“I know times can be tight, and no matter what you’ve got going on, if you wanna come hear the show, we’ve got you covered.”

Those Lavender Whales share catchy, lo-fi gem “Lose My Mind”

“There’s good kinds of growing,” Aaron Graves sings at the outset of My Bones Are Singing, Those Lavender Whales’ second full-length release. “But there’s also some really bad types of growing.”

Ain’t that the truth. In early 2014, doctors found in Graves’s brain an astrocytoma — a rare, cloudy and life-threatening brain tumor, one that would force him into an equally cloudy and life-threatening treatment. It’s hard not to hear the imprint of Graves’s struggle on My Bones Are Singing. The waves of distorted guitars and creaking strings on the wistful “How to Cook Everything”; the spectral, almost ghostly, background vocals that echo Graves’s assertion that “I can’t do this alone” on “Open Up” — My Bones Are Singing is clearly born from great struggle. And though Graves never references his cancer directly, his songs extend thematically, grappling with frustration with ever-decreasing time, questioning your place in the universe, and the possible nonexistence of spiritual authority in a capricious world. “Oh my god, I don’t know if I can handle this,” Graves sings on “Oh My God,” a fizzy pop song with a dark, fuzz bass-driven undercurrent of shaken faith. “Oh, my God, I don’t know if you exist.”

The Light Gathering Lens lost debut self-titled EP

Previous Seattleite and veteran underground musician The Light Gathering Lens’ Eric Burnham now lives in New Mexico, an appropriately beautiful and alien landscape from which he creates his classic 4AD-sounding, extra-terrestrial drone-pop.

Coming up out of the early post-punk scene in the Emerald City, he received acclaim for his guitar playing in the mysterious band Weather Theatre due to his addition to that band’s “dramatic, intense sound” (City Heat). He had since recorded an EP of striking, entrancing music he’d kept hidden for a couple dozen years, which he releases now, as he prepared to continue with his re-found love for making music.

Night Argent Covers ZAYN’s “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever”

Known for their flawless renditions of songs like Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” Katy Perry’s “Legendary Lovers,” Elliphant’s “Revolusion,” and Jon Bellion’s “Guillotine,” fans are constantly asking the band to cover their favorite songs. While the band gears up for their forthcoming EP, they’ve been having some fun in the studio and answering that call. “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” puts the band’s own spin on the track, breaking it down to see how well the song stood on it’s own, without a whole lot of flashy production. Due to their drummer being home sick on the day the video was recorded, the band worked as a trio, forcing them to change the dynamics and try something new.
