The Harlem Fine Arts Show (HFAS) will host a special brunch, lecture and book signing today in recognition of iconic freedom fighter, Harriet R. Tubman, who is set to become the first African American to appear on U.S. currency. Special guests for the luncheon are Karen Hill, president/CEO of the Tubman Home in Auburn, N.Y. and award-winning author, Kate Larsen, PhD, whose book, “Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman, Portrait of an American Hero,” is the definitive Tubman biography. HFAS will make a donation to the Tubman Home to assist in its sustained operations. The luncheon begins today at 11:30 at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown.
“Tubman was overwhelmingly chosen to appear on the 20-dollar bill because of her resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity, her commitment to doing what was right, even when that meant going against the prevailing laws, and for putting others well-being and safety above even her own,” said HFAS founder Dion Clark. “We are privileged to contribute to the Tubman Homes continuing legacy.”

19-year-old songwriter & producer Novaa releases 2nd single ‘HANDS’
“Hands” is about trying to connect to someone but not being able to get past the physical level. I tried to give it a very hypnotic, trance-like and also dark atmosphere that is meant to reflect that desperate feeling of not being able to see someone fully and clearly behind his/her human layers. During the song the protagonist is constantly questioning the relationship to the other person and tries to build a deeper connection. But as the efforts turn out to be pointless the protagonist tries to get that depth and devotion by destroying the relationship.

Words from Curtis Mayz: “Well I’m from Dallas, Texas and we have this annual week long event here called #DallasWeek, where we take time to celebrate the arts and our beloved, yet overlooked music scene. It was started last year by one of the city’s OGs “Nasagang PAT”. So I felt compelled to release a couple joints from the upcoming project in light of that. This special event, presented by Seth Rudetsky/James Wesley and Beachbody.com, brings together the brightest stars of stage and screen to raise awareness about the plight of kids in foster care, particularly those aged 13 to 21 whom many consider “unadoptable” because of their age. Proceeds from the evening directly benefit You Gotta Believe, New York’s only nonprofit specifically focused on finding permanent families for youth in foster care aged 13 years and older.
Every year, nearly 25,000 kids age out of foster care in the U.S., left on their own to make it into adulthood without the safety net of a forever family to provide the security and comfort most of us take for granted. As many as 50 percent of youth who age out of foster care will experience homelessness. In New York City, there are about 1,300 kids awaiting adoption right now. There are an additional 700+ kids on the verge of aging out alone—many of whom were deemed ‘unadoptable’ by the system long ago. As each day goes by, they are one day closer to being pushed out onto their own without a family safety net unless an adoption takes place.

“I think that it’s fair to say that Dope is one of the more evolved bands from our genre & time period,” says Edsel. “Our new single, ‘Hold On,’ is a great example of this. It sounds like Dope, but it is clearly, very modern, and in no way reflects a band who is stuck in its past. The hooks are melodic and memorable, while the musicianship is on full display. I’m very proud of Dope’s ability to walk that evolutionary line.”

Welcoming the collaborative vocals of members Duvall & Luke, the record turns through a series of melodic verses & an infectious chorus. As the track reaches its pivotal breakdown, ‘Daylight’ blends echoed, airy synths before packing momentum with big-room, electronic elements to round off yet another signified anthem.
At first they may seem like strange bedfellows, but Charlotte rapper Well$ and Durham indie electropop duo Sylvan Esso are distinctively North Carolinian. Well$ represents NC Hip-Hop’s combination of the North’s intricate lyricism and the South’s brash boastfulness, while Sylvan Esso creates a blend of Amelia Meath’s signature vocals with Nick Sanborn’s electronic production. On “Young Man,” premiered Friday by The FADER, they prove to be two great tastes that taste great together; the aggressive braggadocio of Well$ during the song’s first half finds its perfect foil in the gentle concern voiced by singer Amelia Meath.

DARKHER’s first release, 2014’s The Kingdom Field EP, epitomized her broodingly intense music and created a stir across scenes, being hailed as “beautiful, teeth-edging horror” and “utterly brilliant”. Her debut album, Realms, impressively proves that the fire of great expectations raised by the EP’s spark were more than justified. Now, Popmatters premieres the new song “Moths”, calling it “ice-cold” and saying, “Darkher does a lot with a little—there’s not much more here than a couple guitars, some strings, and soft drums—and the result is magnificent in its bleakness.”
