BOB HILLMAN RETURNS WITH NEW PETER CASE-PRODUCED ALBUM “LOST SOUL”
After over a decade away from the stage and studio, singer/songwriter and guitarist Bob Hillman is readying the release of his fourth full length album Lost Soul. The San Francisco-based musician returns after a lengthy hiatus with a collection of twelve new songs produced by Peter Case and featuring Joseph Arthur performing on guitar, loops, and piano. Hillman’s literate, tuneful songwriting is on full display on Lost Soul but—with the help of Case and Arthur—he has tapped into a fresh, contemporary sonic landscape. Additional players include drummer Danny Frankel (Lou Reed, kd lang), keyboardist Danny McGough (Tom Waits, Social Distortion) and bassist Jonny Flaugher (Ryan Adams, Joshua Radin). His new album “CHIME HOURS” follows his stunning debut LP “I Sleep. After a childhood of primarily musical theater and Bruce Springsteen thanks to her mom and dad, Lucy Dacus bought an acoustic guitar and taught herself some chords with hopes of one day being the cool girl at church camp. Luckily things changed in high school when kind friends showed her Broken Social Scene, Yo La Tengo, and Ava Luna- bands she continues to listen to regularly. Lucy quickly fell in love with the Richmond, VA music scene and did what she could to sneak into 18+ shows during her high school years, always content as a spectator, not yet participating despite the encouragement of friends. When she decided to study film in college, people were surprised and would say, “not music?” It took years of convincing, confidence building, and a great change of heart before Lucy decided to pursue music.

“We went into this track wanting to create a song that was mellow yet driving,” elaborates FULL OF HELL vocalist Dylan Walker, “We were certainly channeling a lot of what THE BODY has been moving towards and a lot of what FULL OF HELL has been into for some time. Dave, Lee, Seth and Keith [Machines With Magnets] all played drums on this track at the same time. It was a great feeling to have Chrissy Wolpert of the Assembly Of Light Choir singing on the track as well. Our friend Mitch Wells [Thou] created the video with only the lyrics and basic album themes to guide him. He made something that is very different for both bands and something we are very proud of. He captured what we were writing about from an angle that we hadn’t even considered.”

“‘Executioner’ is a song about the dualism of doing something that has a negative net effect in the world,” reveals guitarist Juho Räihä. “Good and bad are just our evaluations of a deed from our perspective. A terrorist, for instance, sees his acts as divinely mandated and inherently good, while the rest of the world sees the same act as evil. It all comes down to perspective and thus enables people to do evil things. This point is wrapped up in a story about an executioner who is just following orders, and thus doesn’t do bad from his own perspective. All atrocities are done with ‘good intentions.'”

Hu$$er flexes his versatility, spitting over a collection of beats while doodles-turned-animations follow him around the scene. Premiered by HotNewHipHop, the “Role Model” freestyle is the first installment of Cult Nation’s Cult Sessions series. The series will feature artists planted in on-the-fly setups, blurring the boundaries of music genres in order to create something truly unique. Brooklyn-based band, Gurus will release their debut album Unconditional Surrender on May 6. Gurus is big multimedia project based with street percussion, saxophone, voices, visuals, and printed material, singing about a cult and at times resembling one. The band shared their new video for “Believers,” the first single from Unconditional Surrender, with Impose Magazine and it is available to share via YouTube.
