Comical yet sinister, Banimal stalks the stage adorned with the cast off toys of childhood. A stark industrial backbeat sets the tone for his strange, sardonic lyricism and monophonic melodies. Raw, minimal and direct, Banimal shares an analog kinship with synth-pop pioneers Devo while paralleling the paranoid themes of Talking Heads and crass caricatures of Weird Al. However the comparisons must end there, to be fair, because Mothersbaugh, Byrne and Yankovic are only human after all. Banimal is another animal altogether.

Inspired by the beautiful mountain scenery of Giant’s Castle and his interaction with friendly locals while in South Africa recently, Camacho wrote and begin recording the track in Africa, and subsequent recording was done in Miami at Jim’s home studio and in Los Angeles at Fernando Perdomo’s (Jakob Dylan / Emitt Rhodes) Reseda Ranch Studios and at Jason Hann’s (String Cheese Incident / EOTO) Bopland Studio. It is Jim’s third single in just over a year and represents new musical territory for Jim: world music. African drums and percussion are a prominent part of the song’s rhythm track.

Last year, 64 communities in Southwest Virginia participated in The Crooked Road’s first-ever Mountains of Music Homecoming with over 30 Crooked Road concerts and hundreds of cultural experiences enjoyed by visitors from across the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The second annual Homecoming will take place this June 10-18, 2016, with another stellar set of regional concerts highlighting the area’s rich traditional music.
