SKOPE NEWS FOR SEPTEMBER 29, 2015

SALLY CREWE ALBUM STREAM

Sally Crewe plays pop music for people who think they don’t have any use for pop music.

If you’re already OK with a great melodic hook and sharp, spunky guitar work, then Sally Crewe is just what you’re looking for. But if you think pop music in the 21st Century either means teen-centric auto-tuned confections that make an adult’s fillings ache or the stuff of aging cultists with Rickenbackers and too many Flamin’ Groovies bootlegs, Sally Crewe is an artist you need in your life. Crewe plays simple, strong, but wiry rock ‘n’ roll that you can hum (or dance) along with without feeling foolish, and when she sings about relationships, work, the state of the world, and the other details of a lived life, you can be over the age of the average Taylor Swift fan and feel like you fit right in. And she makes it all sound like cool, edgy fun.

MARTYRD ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM ‘ENDLESS’

The heavy yet technically challenging metal of Martyrd will soon be on display once more, with the arrival of a new album, ‘Endless,’ and a performance on the star-studded Motorhead’s Motorboat Cruise.

In a statement, the New York-based band (which is comprised of members Aaron Pollard – Vocals, Michael Andreas – Guitar, Mike Kitsos – Guitar, Brian Nichols – Bass, and Randall Lee – Drums) explained:

“We loved what we did with ‘The Mortal Coil,’ but we wouldn’t want to keep making the same album again. All of us have grown as musicians and humans, and its been a natural progression taking us from that era to this new territory we’re exploring with ‘Endless.’ This time around, we’re diving right into the deep end, the album is darker and heavier than anything we’ve ever done before – just how we like it! It’s still Martyrd, but taken to the tenth degree.”

FROTH NEW VIDEO

NPR premiered Froth’s track “Nothing Baby” off their recent album, Bleak. The video is directed by Riley Blakeway. The band is also set to tour the U.S. in October and November, see tour dates below.

FROTH’s debut LP, Patterns, was released in fall 2013 on Burger Records and Lolipop Records, and bared witness to the young group’s rapid musical growth and developing ear for composition. A shimmering mix of jangly 12-string guitars and swirling omnichord sounds, the album offers plenty of moments of pure psych-pop bliss; however, the band also flirts with a darker, driving element that they have continued to explore on subsequent releases.

THE MUSCADETTES PREMIERE FIRST SINGLE “EARTHQUAKE”

Chantal and Kathleen Ambridge were born in Silicon Valley but raised in Montreal, and that dichotomy comes through in their music, influenced by ’60s surf and ’90s grunge, creating an energetic rock, balanced out by sugary vocal harmonies only sisters could deliver. The Ambridge sisters, joined by Joe Gagné (Les Breastfeeders) and Thomas Augustin (Malajube) recorded Side A with Ryan Battistuzzi (Malajube) at Montreal’s Breakglass Studio, and was mixed in Los Angeles with Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast/Fidlar).

DRALMS PREMIERES VIDEO FOR “SHOOK” SINGLE

Vancouver, Canada’s Dralms premiered a video for their single “Shook” this week in advance of the release of their debut full-length album of the same names arrival, October 2 via Boompa Records (North America) and Full Time Hobby (Europe) – watch via YouTube.

“Shook” was directed by the band’s singer/songwriter Christopher Smith himself. Much like his curated Instagram account, he approaches video making with an eye for clean-lined minimalistic modern art and sparse iconography. Smith emerges as a skilled director, using repetitive calculated movement to draw the viewer in. It forces you to look at the details. The flowers change, the sweatshirts change, the woman in the bed is a little more in frame, the musical mood remains the same.

CONRANK “TECH”

Featuring a supremely swung-out rhythm, “Tech” winds and grinds into a weird bass anthem that has natural bounce and flow. The stylings of Mad Zach and Conrank combine for a fully aggressive bass track that has explosive energy behind it, but focuses it into a sideways-leaning tune that will have you full on swanging on ’em.

NELLY “THE FIX”

Today Grammy® award-winning and multi-platinum selling artist, Nelly, releases the official music video for his hit single “The Fix” featuring platinum R&B artist Jeremih. The video was filmed at the iconic Sheats-Goldstein residence in Beverly Hills and directed by Aristotle (Nas, 2Chainz, J. Cole).

VIKTOR RASIIA “36 CHAMBERZ”

“I was blessed enough to spend a substantial amount of time around them and in particular Inspectah Deck, Who gave me jewel after jewel of Wu wisdom. No matter how many questions I had he always had an insightful answer. I remember when I got my first beat machine, it was an ASR-X – the black and purple one. He got up from in front of his and showed me step by step how to work it, then left me with it for two days! I now know how rare it is for a kid to get the opportunity to sit at the feet of masters and learn. ’36 Chamberz’ is my small way of saying much appreciated, your words didn’t fall on deaf ears.”

“PINK DRESS”

“Pink Dress,” and all of the songs from Morrison’s forthcoming LP, The Kingdom Belongs to a Child, are borne from “an exploration of shared grief and emphasize universal compassion for those who go unheard and unseen.” The singer shows raw emotion as she traverses through haunting memories of her childhood in the South as well as her recent grief over losing a child through a miscarriage, and she explores deeply held values, including racial prejudices in the U.S. and equal rights and empowerment for women. – The Boot

COKE WEED PREMIERE FOUND FOOTAGE INSPIRED “ALL THE SHADES” VIDEO

Coke Weed was formed in the summer of 2010 in Bar Harbor, Maine. Fresh from New York, songwriter Milan McAlevey and then new-to-singing Nina Donghia were already planning to start a proper rock band when a chance encounter connected them to guitarist Caleb Davis and drummer Peter Cuffari. The newly formed Coke Weed quickly got to work that fall, recording their first LP, 2011’s Volume One, a low-fi set that firmly established the band’s signature sound: the deadpan singing of Nina D. backed by inventive twin-guitar interplay and a churning, hypnotic rhythm section.
