SKOPE NEWS FOR AUGUST 20, 2015

PINKISH BLACK NEW SONGS FROM BOTH RELEASES

Pinkish Black have announced an October 30 release for their new album Bottom of the Morning via Relapse Records. From the gothic, horror-film organ intro of opener “Brown Rainbow” to the wistful, fuzzed-out conclusion of final track “The Master Is Away,” the 7-track opus demonstrates an unflinching capacity to indulge in all manners of disparate sounds, from doom metal to industrial to post-punk to no-wave. Simultaneously dark and catchy, dissonant and melodic, Bottom of the Morning sounds as if Scott Walker and John Carpenter were having a bad acid trip with the Melvins, or as if someone dipped Pinkish Black’s ambling, psyched-out space-rock influences in a vat of molten iron.

SIA x BIG FREEDIA COLLABORATION “EYE OF THE NEEDLE”

Big Freedia is excited to announce his latest single, a remix with pop sensation Sia, called “Eye of the Needle.”

“I was honored to be asked to collaborate with someone on the level of Sia,” says Big Freedia. In typical Freedia fashion, the remix–produced by New Orleans beat maker BlaqNmild–takes the original’s melancholic tone and flips it into a victory anthem.

THE LONELY WILD “SNOW”

The Lonely Wild are proud to announce the release of their highly anticipated sophomore album Chasing White Light due October 2 via eOne Music / Fast Plastic. The Los Angeles-based band have also announced a hometown release show which will take place September 25 at The Echoplex. Tickets are available here. Chasing White Light’s lead single “Snow” premiered on Buzzbands LA and is available to share via SoundCloud. The Lonely Wild’s frontman Andrew Carroll says, “‘Snow’ came from a dream.” He adds, “I had one of those dreams where you’re falling from a great height and you startle yourself awake, with your heart in your throat. But I didn’t wake up right away. I kept falling, and I had to calm myself down and talk myself into being at peace with my own death. I don’t believe in heaven or hell, or any sort of afterlife. It’s something we tell ourselves to give life purpose, or to make life bearable. But, even though we are each infinitesimal blips in space and time, we can still lead meaningful lives here and now. This is how I wanted to open this record: You’re gonna die. It’s ok.”

PARIS VIDEO “BUCK, BUCK, PASS”

Politically astute Bay Area hip-hop artistParis has a long lasting career filled with incendiary lyrics and shocking videos. But with over 4 million in sales to his credit, Paris still feels the need to chronicle the escalating gun violence-related loss of life, which he refers to as his community’s holocaust.

In “Buck, Buck, Pass,” the latest video from his forthcoming double album, Pistol Politics, Paris chronicles the carnage – but with a twist – detailing the journey of the life of a firearm from its perspective, from its manufactured inception to its illegal use on America’s streets.

RICHARD HAWLEY TO RELEASE ‘HOLLOW MEADOWS’

Following the success of his hugely acclaimed 2012 Top Three U.K. album, Standing At The Sky’s Edge, Richard Hawley, one of the U.K.’s greatest songwriters, will release his eighth studio album, HOLLOW MEADOWS on September 11th, via Warner Bros. Records in the US and Parlophone Records in the U.K.

Recorded at Sheffield’s Yellow Arch Studio in spring 2015, HOLLOW MEADOWS sees Hawley return to the classic, sophisticated songwriting and subtle arrangements that made him so widely loved and revered in the first place. Meditating on such themes as ageing, fallibility and relationships, much of the album shares a brooding, yet wistful and romantic atmosphere in keeping with early albums Late Night Final and Lowedges, as well as touches of 2009’s Truelove’s Gutter and “Standing At The Sky’s Edge”.

HOT NATURED NEW SINGLE

‘Off World Lover’ rides the path between discerning house anthem and enduring pop classic beautifully, the subtleties of Ali Love’s vocals masterfully executed amidst Hot Natured’s trademark futuristic analogue sounds. The labour and evolution of the band is evident in its simplicity and matured approach, and the result an instant classic.

Rising Bristolian producer Will Clarke strips back ‘Off World Lover’ and shapes it for the club circuit through buoyant beats and voluptuous breakdowns, both set for release on Emerald City, the newest label venture from Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, on 18th September.

KAGE EHEH “YOUNG SUPERHERO”

“The song was inspired by my childhood obsession with superheroes,” says Kage. “Spiderman, Superman, Ironman and The Hulk were some of my favorites. At least that’s what people tell me.”

DESTRUCTION UNIT SHARES NEW TRACK “THE UPPER HAND”

The Destruction Unit have about a month left until their recently announced Negative Feedback Resistor LP finally hits the streets via Sacred Bones Records. Earlier this summer the band announced the album simply with a manifesto of sorts, declaring that there is no chance of Destruction Unit slowing down, or obeying any set of ‘rules’ when it comes to making this music. Out of left field came the first ‘single’ from the album, “If Death Ever Slept,” which took what you’d imagine a followup track to their beloved Deep Trip LP would sound like and spun it on its head. It’s faster, meaner, and the entire track set at a blitzkrieg pace.

WALTER TROUT & GUITAR WORLD PREMIERES “ALMOST GONE”

With bristling energy, unflagging virtuosity and lyrics that cut to the core of human hope and willpower, Walter Trout’s new album, Battle Scars, chronicles his horrific battle with liver failure. QUIET PARADE “WE WERE HERE”

Like the music itself, Quiet Parade’s evolution has moved in a slow crescendo, steadily but insistently building on a foundation of nostalgia and longing, to create songs that are as forward-looking melodically as they are lyrically wistful, a carefully cultivated combination of folk-pop music. Quiet Parade marched to life as a solo project for Trevor Murphy, but on this self-titled full-length, the Halifax fog-rock unit steps forward together.

THE OUTFIT, TX “ALL BILLS PAID”

What better way to cool down in the Texas heat than popping the top on a Lone Star beer? Dallas’ waviest rapper/producer trio The Outfit, TX invited the city to their front yard to celebrate the relief and stress-free feeling of having all “All Bills Paid.” Mel’s drawling vocals are the linchpin of TOTX’s woozy sound, and on “All Bills Paid” they’re complemented by an edgy verse from JayHawk that preaches action over words, as well as spirited rhymes from fellow Dallas rapper Devy $tonez. Just a few weeks ago, Noisey debuted TOTX’s Deep Ellum EP, a compilation produced entirely by TOTX’s Mel and Dorian that features a slew of undiscovered talent from their hometown scene. With the Deep Ellum EP serving as a statement for the camaraderie that exists within the Dallas scene, TOTX are preparing for the release of their anticipated follow-up album to 2013’s Cognac/Four Corner Room for later this year.
