LEE ANN WOMACK SCORES 2 AMA NOMS

Lee Ann Womack, the diminutive country torch singer, made a decision seven years ago to follow her heart. If people thought she was crazy to walk away from the multi-platinum world of mainstream country to record the songs that moves the East Texas classicist, Womack’s heart won out.

Today, the Grammy-winner from East Texas picked up a pair of prestigious Americana Music Awards nominations. The Way I’m Livin’, proving to be the little record that could, joins Shakey Graves’ And The War Came, Lucinda Williams’ Down Where The Spirit Meets the Bone, Sturgill Simpson’s Meta Modern Sounds in Country Music and former North Carolina Chocolate Drop Rhiannon Giddens in the Album of the Year category.

MR. GNOME DREAM-LIKE “SLEEPWALKER” PREMIERES AT CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

Following on the heels of 2011’s Madness In Miniature LP, Cleveland duo Mr. Gnome returned with the soaring, shapeshifting album The Heart of a Dark Star to numerous critical accolades. Forging beauty out of chaos with their fusing of widescreen concepts and surreal psychedelia since their inception, singer/guitarist Nicole Barille, and drummer/pianist Sam Meister layered vocals, searing guitars, and driving rhythms together to transport the listener into another world that came in and out of focus without ever losing its cinematic eye. The album was mixed by engineer Kevin McMahon (Walkmen, Titus Andronicus, Swans, Real Estate), and was leaner than ever before. Sure the bound’s signature maximum volume was reached via some swift gut punches throughout, but it was the first time the band showed a more poppy side, with some parts of the album drifting to new, sonically rich territory.

KINGS DESTROY “MYTHOMANIA”

“Every band has ‘that’ song on an album,” relays KINGS DESTROY vocalist Steve Murphy of “Mythomania,” the latest single to come off the band’s soon-to-be-unleashed, self-titled full-length.

“It’s the song that you poured your heart and soul into for months. The song where the vocal line simmers in your skull refusing to reveal itself until you are completely frustrated by it. The song where the drums are not obvious or continually being perfected until the last minute. ‘Mythomania’ is that song on this album. Conservatively, we spent six months working this song out. It was constantly being revised,” he continues. “We had multiple discussions about scrapping it. It was a war within a war of creation. This is not a song that was borne out of a few beers and bong hits. It’s a song that reaches from the soul. The lyrics are a metaphor for the growing gap between the haves and have nots in the world. The transition from quiet to aggressive is one of the best on the album as a whole and it’s also a reflection of the band’s singular personality. Mellow to chaos, life hurtling towards death, external peace masking internal gnarling anger. Challenge yourself, take the ‘Mythomania’ ride. The voice cracking at the end is both the voice of total victory and agonizing defeat. Can you hear it?”

THE MONTECRISTOS “BORN TO ROCK N ROLL”

The Montecristos are reinventing the shimmer and the throb, the tingle of illicit pleasure awakened by the sin-drenched echo of 1950’s guitars. The Montecristos are the midnight soundtrack for Jayne Mansfield; hips swaying like a storm at sea knocking at the Green Door of all your rock ‘n’ roll dreams.

At the helm is Neal X – former guitarist of million-selling, futuristic glam-rock potentates, Sigue Sigue Sputnik and long-term sideman of electro-burlesque starman Marc Almond (who appears on the album as special guest vocals on a cover of Brand New Cadillac).

LIKE SWIMMING COVER MAJOR LAZER

His songs are a rich and robust working of intricately orchestrated songs that utilize well-crafted pop-structures. One of his latest songs is collaboration between the alluring singer MØ and trappy producer DJ Snake called, “Lean On.” This track showcases his skill of weaving familiar electronic sounds, with beautiful vocals and pristine pop structures. PETER BJORN AND JOHN ARE BACK

It’s been four years since the last proper Peter Bjorn And John album, 2011’s earworm-laden Gimme Some. While it may appear that the trio have taken a hiatus, they actually spent 2012 founding INGRID, a record label/artist collective that includes fellow Swedes like Lykke Li and Miike Snow, and the lot of them are about to release a new compilation. On the new “High Up (Take Me To The Top),” PB&J experiment with industrial textures and drum loops. It’s got all the tightly wound pop sensibility of their earlier work, but the chorus pulsates with the fire of a deep house beat. The single will appear on the second INGRID compilation album, INGRID Volym 2.
