Ahead of the release of a brand new single next month, Sunshine Coast-based artist Ayla was awarded the prestigious Billy Thorpe Scholarship at the annual Queensland Music Awards (QMAs), held last night at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Established in honour of the legendary, late Billy Thorpe, the scholarship was designed to help foster the future of Australian music with a $10,000 prize. This year saw a record number of applications; finalist included Babaganouj, Ayla, Moses Gunn Collective and Sahara Beck.

The award follows a remarkable 12 months for the 19 year old artist, whose debut single ‘Wish I Was’ became the 15th most played song on triple j last year following its release in early 2014.
