SKOPE NEWS FOR JANUARY 26, 2015

DYING SCENE RECORDS SIGNS WESTERN SETTINGS + “REVHEAD”

DYING SCENE RECORDS has announced the signing of San Diego punk act WESTERN SETTINGS and will be releasing the band’s debut full-length “Yes It Is” on February 17th.

Punk rock has long since embraced the emotional assurance of bands like Jawbreaker and the Replacements, to the point that heart-on-the-sleeve punk has become little more than a buzzword. It sounds great, sure, and the imagery it conjures up is of aggressive strums backing open-wound lyrics that cut as much as they stick, but its the rare band that delivers on that promise. Western Settings’ debut “Yes It Is” delivers, and it delivers hard. Filled from top to bottom with sticky melodies and muscular musicianship, Western Settings has written a record that rocks as hard as it resonates.

NEW SINGLE BY SURF ROCK IS DEAD

With ambient drum beats and wistful vocals, Brooklyn-duo Surf Rock is Dead (SRiD) arrive with a collection of blissful tunes that hit you like a bittersweet wave of nostalgia, kind of like that last hangover of the summer. ANWAR SADAT SHARE UNCENSORED “OBEDIENCE” VIDEO

Industrial punk-trio Anwar Sadat is psyched to share their debut video for the title-track on their recently released Obedience EP available now on Sick Room Records. The uncensored (NSFW) video is pure unadulterated surrealism from a band known to push the boundaries with both their recordings and their intense live shows. “This is the first music video from Anwar Sadat; shot during an intense few hours beneath a massive warehouse in Louisville, Kentucky, “explains bassists and vocalist, Shane Wesley. “Inspired in equal parts by Kenneth Anger and “Videodrome”, the video for “Obedience” turns the economy of war and cultural docility reflected in the lyrics into a kind of surrealist snuff film.”

HERMITUDE “THROUGH THE ROOF”

“Through the Roof” is the lively new single from Hermitude, a contrast of light and dark–a dancefloor tune with a monstrous personality. The festivities begin with a rewired Mariachi section sounding the horns before descending into a powerful synth riff set to swinging drums. Hermitude’s deft rearrangement of Young Tapz’ vocal fragments move and sway until finally coming together at the chorus in a celebratory show of defiance.

Two-time Norwegian Grammy nominees, KEEP OF KALESSIN, will unleash their long-anticipated new full-length in North America next month via Indie Recordings.

Make no mistake, however. The indisputable power of these three musical craftsmen translates perfectly on the band’s most diverse recording to date. As grandiose as a Peter Jackson battle scene bedecked with fire-breathing dragons and treacherous mountains draped in guitars and drums of doom, Epistemology highlights the true guitar virtuosity of vocalist/guitarist Obsidian C. From bone-scraping riffs and sweeping solos, to smooth, melodic passages swathed in warm, poignant tones backed by the military precision of bassist Wizziac and drummer Vyl, KEEP OF KALESSIN anno 2015 is heading out for greatness!

Also featured on the 10-track album are special guests Lucius on the song “New Haven.” Of the new album, Stokes comments, “We started recording the album this past January in Chicago during the Polar Vortex. I couldn’t believe that everyone showed up that first day—school had been canceled, restaurants were closed and cars were abandoned in the middle of the street (my van included). As Sam (Beam) stepped inside and warmed up, I remember Brian Deck saying, ‘I got a good feeling about this cold. Nothing of any worth was ever made easily.’”

COBRA STARSHIP’S “NEVER BEEN IN LOVE” (FEAT. ICONA POP)

Cobra Starship recently joined forces with Icona Pop for the DCD2 Records/Fueled By Ramen band’s latest single “Never Been In Love.” Cobra Starship also teamed up with Wallpaper. and John Ryan to create the single’s stadium-pop sound reminiscent of early 90’s pop. “I had been listening to a lot of early 90’s UK artists — Jesus Jones, EMF, George Michael,” explains Gabe Saporta, “It was a time when bands first started incorporating break beats and electronic elements into their music. I had been trying to find a way to modernize that sound.” When Wallpaper. had the idea to sample Fatboy Slim’s “Praise You,” Gabe knew they had hit the nail on the head. “I heard that piano break and I knew we had it.”

AVA LUNA FIRST SINGLE “BILLZ”

While on a writing retreat in the sleepy southern town of Benton, Mississippi, the members of New York’s Ava Luna came across an abandoned house while on a walk through the woods. Overgrown, rotting, and littered with evidence of its past inhabitants, the maze-like dwelling would haunt their psyches throughout the writing and recording of their third full-length Infinite House. Like Borges’ Library of Babel, the seemingly endless rooms and hallways in the old house felt like a metaphor for the invisible, internal labyrinths, which the band explores lyrically and sonically on their new album.
