SKOPE NEWS FOR JANUARY 13, 2015

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE ANNOUNCE “KINTSUGI”

Atlantic recording group Death Cab for Cutie has announced the release of their much-anticipated eighth studio album. “KINTSUGI” arrives everywhere on March 31st.

“KINTSUGI” – which follows 2011’s GRAMMY® Award-nominated “CODES AND KEYS” – marks Death Cab for Cutie’s first new album since the departure last year of founding guitarist/keyboardist/producer Chris Walla. Recorded in Los Angeles with Rich Costey (Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Interpol) behind the board, the album takes its title from the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum, highlighting cracks rather than hiding them. As such, kintsugi represents a compassionate aesthetic philosophy in which damage and wear are embraced as part of an object’s history.

THE BABYS KICK OFF 2015 WITH A NEW VIDEO

With the release of their new album I’ll Have Some Of That, and their single “I See You There” hitting the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Single Sales chart at the end of 2014, The Babys aren’t slowing down any time soon…

The newly released video for “I See You There” is an intimate look at the band in a “behind-the-scenes” setting: songwriting, collaborating, performing, and generally enjoying making music together. The song, written by guitarist Joey Sykes, revitalizes the classic Babys melodic flair – that sound that made smash hits out of “Every Time I Think Of You,” “Head First,” and “Back On My Feet Again.”

WAXAHATCHEE “AIR”

Waxahatchee will return with Ivy Tripp on April 7 via Merge Records in North America and Wichita Recordings in the rest of the world.

Waxahatchee, the solo musical project of Katie Crutchfield, is named after a creek not far from her childhood home in Alabama and seems to represent both where she came from and where she’s going.

Ivy Tripp drifts confidently from its predecessors and brings forth a more informed and powerful recognition of where Crutchfield has currently found herself. The lament and grieving for her youth seem to have been replaced with control and sheer self-honesty.

CALLAGHAN TO RELEASE ‘A HISTORY OF NOW’ IN APRIL

Nashville based singer/songwriter Callaghan is set to release her second album, A History of Now, on April 7, 2015, via her own label, Green Town Music. Featuring Callaghan’s trademark sound, which blurs the edges between pop, adult contemporary and Americana, the new record is the latest chapter of a success story based on hard work and a strong connection with a growing army of fans for the artist who moved to the U.S. from London in the summer of 2010.

A History of Now was recorded in Nashville with producer Dennis Matkosky (a songwriting legend whose credits include Keith Urban’s “You’ll Think of Me” and the Flashdance soundtrack’s “Maniac,” as well as several co-writes on the Callaghan album) and features contributions from some of Nashville’s best session players. Casey Brown, a member of Owl City, made loops for several songs, adding a modern edge to the album’s analog vibe. On a record filled with musical all-stars, Callaghan is easily the most impressive player, singing all 12 songs in a sweet, soaring voice that booms and breaks at all the right moments.

CRAIG MARKET & THOMM JUTZ DUO PROJECT

Craig Market and Thomm Jutz will release their duo project, Nowhere to Hide on January 29. This record was recorded over a span of twelve days (one song per day) at Jutz’s log cabin studio outside of Nashville. It’s fitting that the music recorded in a log cabin would be simple and free of clutter-this record is just that: two writers, two voices and two guitars, namely a 1937 Martin D18 played by Market and a 1948 Martin D18 played by Jutz. Be careful to not mistake simplicity for dull-the record is layered and poetic-something new that feels strangely familiar.

Separately, both Market & Jutz have blazed their own successful musical trails. Market is one of the most recorded songwriters in today’s world of acoustic music. His songs have been cut over 100 times, by artists like Dan Tyminski, Ronnie Bowman, Lonesome River Band, Blue Highway, and many more. Jutz is an award winning songwriter, guitar player, and producer who moved to Nashville in 2003 and became a favored contributor to the works of troubadours Nanci Griffith, Kim Richey, and David Olney. His production credits include Country Music Hall of Famer Mac Wiseman, songwriting genius Todd Snider, country-punk hero Jason Ringenberg, and others. Together, with Nowhere to Hide, they forge forward into unfamiliar yet musically comfortable territory.

THE DISCO FRIES REMIX

Back in July the Disco Fries teamed up with Niko the Kid to craft their summer hit ‘The Light’, which was met with great support including a rotation spot on SiriusXM. The production lent itself well to the remixers ear and MANIK, Tommie Sunshine & Halfway House, and Bounce Inc all put their personal spins on the already stellar tune.

Tommie Sunshine & Halfway House transform the tune into a big-room electro powerhouse, while MANIK lends his unique style of NY house to ‘The Light’ forming it into a dancefloor groover. Bounce Inc brings the fun with their in-your-face-bounce style and the Disco Fries round out the remix EP with a beautiful acoustic rendition of their original, stepping outside of EDM and demonstrating their prolific talent as producers.

BRIAN CULBERSON LIVE DOUBLE CD

Years ago, a young ambitious musician-songwriter-producer emerged from Chicago who went on to architect 27 No. 1 Billboard singles along with a half-dozen albums that debuted at No.1 that changed the status quo with a creative and fresh alchemy of astutely performed contemporary jazz, soulful R&B and horn-powered funk. Decades later, his ability to achieve and balance commercial success and the respect of his peers is perhaps as admirable as his hit-making consistency and the meticulous approach he uses to craft infectious melodies and compelling rhythms. The above description could easily apply to the works of his role models, Maurice White and Quincy Jones, but here we refer to Brian Culbertson.

From the 1994 debut of “Long Night Out,” released while the keyboardist-trombonist was a DePaul University music major recording demos in the bedroom of his crowded apartment that landed him a six-album record deal, right up through his 14th album, 2014’s “Another Long Night Out,” Culbertson has injected a much needed jolt of lyrical harmony and deft musicianship along with a flair for lively showmanship that meshes to form an aesthetic that raises the bar on a musical genre. To commemorate his 20th anniversary as a recording artist, Culbertson marched his well-drilled band out on a coast-to-coast concert mission last year that was preserved for posterity on his first live album recorded during a sold-out, eight-show stand at the famed Yoshi’s nightclub in Oakland, California last September. The resulting double CD set, “Live – 20th Anniversary Tour,” was released Monday – Culbertson’s 42nd birthday – on his own BCM Entertainment label.
