RETT SMITH VIDEO “I SWEAR”
Rett Smith’s video for his debut single “I Swear” is a dark and harrowing look at the power of loneliness and suspicion. Featuring atmospheric scenes that incorporate the essence of Rett’s sound, there are crowds of people spinning around one another, yet infinitely disconnected from their own emotions. As Rett’s character seemingly destroys what is left of an already failing relationship, as well as his own moral compass, he remains unaffected as he strums his guitar and glows with trouble the same way the music does. The cinematic quality aids in the frustrating, emotionally damaged undertone within the story itself; while the wailing guitar riffs heighten the soulful, disengaged attitude of Rett’s own vocals. Between scenic changes from bar fights to withdrawn dancers, there’s no doubt that the video itself encompasses the emotional storyline of this turbulent debut single.

The short film is called “Our Hearts’ Desires” and is set in an unspecified era where a revolution is in the making. It tells the story of desire, ecstasy and forbidden love. Says de Thurah, “‘Do It Again’ feels like it’s an unstoppable pop mantra of something out of hand. A spiraling hypnotic maelstrom. The video touches ‘our hearts’ desires’: deep passions; revolutions full of hope and excitement; a dream of freedom; obsession; the ecstasy and escapism; the darkness. And it ends in a mix of violence and laughter, freedom and the loss of free will. All of this somehow ends on a note of hope through struggle. Something worth fighting for. Do it again.”

Originally a drummer, Los Angeles-based producer and vocalist K. Roosevelt came out from behind the scenes in 2013 with his R&B single “Do Me Now.” While enrolled as a drummer in Hollywood’s Musicians Institute, Roosevelt discovered production thanks to the school’s policy that all percussionists must also take recording classes. The school’s reasoning was that drummers understand structure and how music is built, and Roosevelt found it to be true, and soon, he switched his focus to studio work. Work with Overdoz, H.O.P.E., and others followed with his big break coming in 2011 thanks to his work on Skeme’s single “Thank God.”

Billy Joel ranks as one of the most popular recording artists and respected entertainers in the world. His piano-fueled narratives take listeners into the relatable and deeply personal moments of life, mirroring his own goal of writing songs that “meant something during the time in which I lived … and transcended that time.” “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,” “The Entertainer,” “Piano Man,” “Big Shot,” “New York State of Mind,” “You May Be Right,” “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” “Allentown,” “Uptown Girl” and “The Downeaster ‘Alexa’” are among many other classics in a rich and deep catalog of songs that have acted as personal and cultural touchstones for millions of people.

Previous recipients are Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and the late Hal David, and Carole King.
NEW SINGLE BY TEAMMATE
Indie Pop duo TeamMate have released their latest single “Goldmine” on Rostrum Records. The track, originally premiering with The Music Ninja, is available for free download for the first week on the band’s Soundcloud page.
With soaring synths harmonizing perfectly with Simons’ vocals, this song sports an intense and energetic tempo carried by Buncher’s percussion work. Fast-paced hi-hat hits mixed in over rolling toms making this song the antithesis of laid back indie rock, taking on a delightfully charged-up synth pop persona instead. – Clayton Warwick – The Music Ninja
