Undertow album for sale by David Gelman was released Mar 26, 2013 on the CD Baby label. A highly second anticipated CD from a singer songwriter, featuring all original heartfelt songs on acoustic guitar and piano, accompanied by musicians on electric guitar, violin, viola, bass, drums, lap steel guitar, mandolin and back-up vocals. This is such a complex, amazing and dramatic album what else can I say in the end? This latest CD by Gelman is more than amazing, you can easily picture scenes with this music in feature film. It has a theatrical quality to it! The intro pieces — “Take me to Babylon”, “Undertow” and “Sail Away with Me” get things underway smoothly presenting really uplifting, yet emotional charged vocals reminiscent of acts such as Matt White, Carlos Bertonatti, John Kelley and Eric Hutchinson. When Gelman hits the chorus on “Take me Back” I literally was on the verge of some powerful emotions there. It was then I realized I heard some classic Cat Stevens and James Taylor shine through. All songs present really strong melodies and at times gripping subjects and topics. It’s also impossible to deny the superiority of this band backing him up as well. True to form pop I was especially blown away at how all songs drove you naturally towards the chorus with amazing lyrics compatible to the peak. Good playing by Gelman on here as well. The drums and bass lines just help push songs forward, and the vibe if you pay attention carefully has this retro 70’s pop embellishment. As the CD evolves it showcases a really rock steady line up of songs with musical tidbits like piano, solo guitar licks, strings and smooth rhythm section. In conclusion, here’s an album that quite literally made my day. Pardon me for saying but I get so many boring, un-interesting, overly-forgetful CD’s to review. I have been dying to listen to “Undertow” by David Gelman for quite some time now. It’s subliminal, it’s epic, it’ a grand concept that’s sure to get your attention — yet it’s very simple and magical. From the production to the musicians, including the great guest players to legendary songs — David Gelman delivers. With the advent of Gelman’s latest CD “Undertow” in the ever evolving realm of pop it’s nice to know he remembers his musical roots of this amazing genera. Recording Artist, Writer, Producer, Performer—Bravo, I say!
