It’s another smoked-out studio session in Brooklyn’s Showoff Basement. The usual suspects are here: fingerprinted MPC pads, old gospel records scattered across the floor, a Pro Tools session open on the monitor above the SSL mixer. In the center of it all sits Statik Selektah, meticulously arranging, humming countermelodies over the Bill Medley sample he just chopped up. The legendary Black Thought of the Roots pens his verse in the booth. He spits his 32 bars in one take. The next morning, “Bird’s Eye View,” the first single off of Statik Selektah’s forthcoming album Extended Play, is finished.
