The first single “Balding” is premiering today at Diffuser.fm and though certainly rife with metaphor, is also meant to be taken literally as well. The tune bounces through its paces like an anxious metronome, at moments channeling the convulsive jazz of John Zorn only to morph into the indie rock equivalent of Gregorian chant. In The Backyard is in many ways an album about accepting imperfections, with “Balding” affirming that “you can poke, you can prod, but it’s never coming back to you” and it’s best to just play with the cards life deals.
