Preview: Moogfest 2011

Moogfest is an annual music festival that takes place in Asheville, NC. This year the festival runs from October 28-30. Bring your Halloween costume!

Moogfest honors Robert Moog the sonic visionary and technical wizard behind numerous electronic musical instruments including synthesizers. The festival is a multi-venue event with musical acts, workshops and panels throughout downtown Asheville.

Brian Eno’s art exhibit 77 Million Paintings will be on display and frames the musical and artistic nature of the festival.

Moog features over 70 bands of mostly electronic persuasion. Headliners include Moby, Chromeo and Umphrey’s McGee.

The festival features many indie rock and electro pop outfits. This reviewer’s favorites include TV on the Radio, The Antlers, Atlas Sound, The Flaming Lips, Crystal Castles, St. Vincent, YACHT, Passion Pit, Neon Indian, Toro Y Moi, The Drums and Active Child. Passion Pit’s Micheal Angelekos has a knack for writing catchy lyrics imbued with emotion. The songs are upbeat and dancey but the lyrics are plaintive and forlorn. His falsetto vocals are a suitable conduit to express his sentimental lyrics. The electronic arrangements are layered with synthesizer melodies and samples. It is highly danceable electro pop that creates a deceivingly cheerful juxtaposition to the melancholic content.

The track “Sleepyhead” is a highly textured electronic jaunt with thudding drumbeats and layered samples including vocals from the song “Oro Mo Bhaidin” by Irish singer Mary O’Hara dotted throughout.
