SKOPE NEWS FOR FEBRUARY 23, 2015

BMB SPACEKID NEW SINGLE

Sometimes the new In Sound comes from Way Out! And in the case of Saint Petersburg, Russian native BMB Spacekid AKA Dmitry Semenov, Way Out means the Northern-most city in the world.

But in these broadband days, hip hop is played on a global field and we’re used to names emerging out of the (Sound)cloud(s) from Europe’s most Northerly coordinates.

BMB Spacekid is next up, having attracted one of 2015’s fastest rising rappers, 20 YO Virginia native GoldLink with his smoothed out sub-heavy, G-Funk. The kind of beats that fit snugly with GoldLink and his self-titled ‘Future Bounce’ sound. Not to mention GoldLink’s outsized MC persona, which he describes as “Rick James meets Justin Timberlake (*NSYNC days) with Backstreet Boys and a little D12 and Tupac.”

JORDAN RAKEI X JAMES CHATBURN “HOLIDAY LOVE”

Australian newcomer James Chatburn, and soul darling Jordan Rakei, have teamed up to produce an undisputed banger of a track. Melding influences from hip-hop, soul and RnB, Holiday Love is a pleasingly seductive mix of acoustic and electronic elements, with the on-point production that has become Rakei’s trademark. The boys flirtatiously play with space, harmony and drum samples, tag teaming on vocals, with the result being a track which is equal parts fun, innovative, and alluring.

Holiday Love is the first single from James Chatburn’s 2015 EP, Cracks and Breaks, available on iTunes later this year, with Jordan featuring on a second track.

GRATEFUL DEAD DRUMMER BILL KREUTZMANN TO RELEASE GROUNDBREAKING MEMOIR

The Grateful Dead are perhaps the most legendary American rock band of all time. For 30 years, beginning in the San Francisco hippie scene in 1965, they were a musical institution, the original jam band that broke new ground in so many ways. From the music to their live concert sound systems and recordings, they were forward-thinking champions of artistic control and outlaw artists who marched to the beat of their own drums.

Now, in his upcoming memoir DEAL: My Three Decades of Drumming, Dreams, and Drugs with the Grateful Dead (St. Martin’s Press; on-sale May 5, 2015; $27.99), Bill Kreutzmann — a founding member and drummer for every one of their over 2,300 concerts-has written an unflinching and wild account of playing in the greatest improvisational band of all time. Everything a rock music fan would expect is here, but what sets this apart is Kreutzmann’s incredible life of adventure that was at the heart of the Grateful Dead experience. This was a band that knew no limits and he lived life to the fullest, pushing the boundaries of drugs, drums and high times, through devastating tragedy and remarkable triumph.

LIFELESS “NEVER”

Revolver Magazine has released the first single and opening track to Dream, the sophomore LP from pummeling New Jersey metallic hardcore outfit, LIFELESS. Wearing the sounds of their East Coast hardcore heroes and peers with pride, a tumultuous undertow of downtrodden metal rage influences each anthem on the gloomy Dream LP, and setting the stage for the beating to follow is the lead track, “Never.” Casting a brief sense of sad silence in its intro, things quickly go sour as the track kicks in with full force and opens up the forty-minute deluge of the album.

After years of burning through venues and warehouses around the country, the band has captured this essence in the form of their debut full-length Blood Dancer, an album that channels both the grinding bleakness and dynamic energy of their native city.
