AVA FESTIVAL AND CONFERENCE IS BACK
For the third year running, AVA (Audio Visual Arts) Festival and Conference is set to return to its Belfast home at T13, this time across two days on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2017. For it’s first full weekend outing, AVA pulls out all the stops with a packed agenda of conferences, talks, music and arts from a wealth of global and local artists. You’ll find a rare Jeff Mills and Guillaume Marmin collaboration, Marcel Dettmann, Bicep, Fatima Yamaha Live, Rebekah Hybrid set, TinFoil Live and a host of local legends ready to descend across the vast Belfast warehouse space. On top of this, there’s the return of the almighty Boiler Room, plus AVA’s all-important conference on the Friday will educate on all areas of the music industry and technology. With weekend tickets starting from £50 and flights to Belfast for around the £20 mark, there’s no excuse not to be a part of AVA 2017.
A UK and Ireland debut, Jeff Mills will be collaborating with French lighting designer Guillaume Marmin to create ‘Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind’, a full sensory experience recreating the sensation of entering and existing in another reality, for what is set to be a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Bicep return to their home ground, after a solid run of live performances and studio time on their rumoured upcoming album, expect new material and some insight into their 2017 output, plus techno hero Marcel Dettmann heads to Belfast’s Titanic T13 warehouse, the ideal dystopian setting for his intense sound. Respected selectors Ben UFO, Job Jobse and Midland all join, journeying from disco classics to bass-tinged techno, and dark, steely tones from Birmingham’s own Rebekah, who will perform a hybrid set as part of her ‘Fear Paralysis’ album tour. One of many live performances comes from man of the moment Fatima Yamaha, whose 2016 album was one of last year’s most celebrated releases, exploring the emotive side of house.
The Show Ponies – ‘How It All Goes Down’
Beloved, energetic and soulful five-piece Americana, alt-country/folk band the Show Ponies released their new studio LP, How It All Goes Down, last Friday, January 20th. Produced by Andy Freeman (Eisley/Manchester Orchestra, Rocketboys), the album follows the band’s 2014 EP Run For Your Life and 2013 LP We’re Not Lost, which to date have garnered over 14 million plays on Spotify.

The Kin will release MODERN PRIMITIVE this Friday worldwide. This final album completes over a decade of recording and touring internationally for the NYC trio and is the result of massive support from their beloved fans. The song takes the perspective of a guy who believes the girl he’s seeing wants commitment that he isn’t ready for. As the song progresses, he sheds his “player” persona and realizes that he actually does want exclusivity. The last verse finds him confessing his feelings to her–fully expecting her to reciprocate–when to his surprise, she’s the one who isn’t ready to commit.
The song is meant to be fun on a superficial level but a careful review reveals a more serious sentiment (marked by points in the song where the production and vocal delivery change to denote more sober, introspective thought). Specifically, it is a commentary on the non-committal nature of courtship in the “millennial” era and attempts to examine the feelings that come with being on either side of a relationship where one person wants more than the other.
Brandon Krebs’ Refuge In Exile out St. Patrick’s Day, March 2017
“Avant-garde pop for everybody, filled with romantically gloomy soul voyages” is the best way to shorthand the windswept ache of Brandon Krebs’ widescreen rock. “Making records for me is a therapeutic process almost,” Seattle songwriter/musician/producer Brandon Krebs explains. “It’s my favorite thing in the world.”
Krebs has decided to go with creating under his own name for new album Refuge In Exile, due out in mid-March. A deliberate change up from the heavy guitar-rock of his last release Tethered to A Piece of Falling Sky (recorded under previous moniker Stranded Sullivan), Refuge In Exile’s instantly breathtaking sweep and rhythmically undulating hooks challenge its title’s reveal of how it was made intimately and mindfully in an uncertain two-year period of the artist’s life.

Richard Edwards of Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s Announces Debut Solo LP
On March 31, Richard Edwards will release his debut album Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset on Joyful Noise Recordings. The album was produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Cass McCombs, Beck) in Los Angeles, and features a stellar lineup of musicians including Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello) on drums and guitar work from Mike Bloom (Jenny Lewis).

Francis Inferno Orchestra stream ‘Oasis (Erotikk Mix)’
It’s been a year since Francis Inferno Orchestra’s last hit for Superconscious Records ‘Harmony’ shredded it’s way into record bags across the globe. Chris “Oz” Ferrara to release single “No Mercy”
Boston-born and Nashville-based performer Chris “Oz” Ferrara is set to release his new single, “No Mercy,” to radio and on digital sales portals this spring. The country radio impact date is March 20, 2017, and Oz plans to hit the road on a radio promo tour beginning in February to promote the song. “No Mercy” will be available from MB15Management in conjunction with Rock Ridge Music and NineNorth Records on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and other digital outlets on March 17, 2017.

Night Games drop silky single ‘Replicant’
On February 2nd, after two acclaimed nights in 2016, East London’s Night Games continue their series subverting the traditional perception of gig spaces by playing in one of London’s most iconic landmarks, the St. Pancras clock tower.
The huge Gothic tower was constructed between 1868 and 1873, and Night Games will be performing inside the 10 metre high tower room.

Swet Shop Boys share new music video for ‘Zayn Malik’
Swet Shop Boys have returned with visuals for ‘Zayn Malik’, a defiant celebration of multiculturalism in these divided times. Shot in London’s predominantly (South) Asian Southall and Whitechapel neighborhoods, the video contains hip-hop tropes, with tracksuited entourages surrounded by souped up cars while subverting the genre with drones that are more a commentary on surveillance than cheap aerial shots.

A new music project by three women in Athens: Marilena Orfanou (synths, composer – Berlin Brides, DJ Loo) Maria Hatzakou (drums – film producer at Haos Film) Gina Dimakopoulou (guitar – Katrin the Thrill). They love analogue sounds and toy synths, chaotic guitars, fake strings, female vocals and off-beat rhythms.
S.W.I.M.’s first appearance was a live ciné concert at the 16th Festival du Film Francophone de Grèce in 2015, where they performed their original soundtrack for the silent 1929 film Astero.

In late 2013, rural-born brothers Dave and Aiden McMillian traded the sun-drenched plains of northern New South Wales for the rich cultural tapestry — and comparatively dreary weather — of Melbourne. 2015 sees the two siblings (alongside Andre Franco on bass, and Alex Buchanan on guitar) continue to draw influence from their provenance in Redspencer.
CLOVES Releases Video for “Better Now”
CLOVES unveils her music video for ‘Better Now’, a song that pulls no punches and doubles-up as the first song to be announced from her debut album out in 2017. The recent release of the track on Spotify saw it quickly amass over 1.7 million streams with a swarm of tastemaker blog coverage. The track was written over the course of a single day in London alongside her long-term writing collaborator Justin Parker (Banks, Bat For Lashes etc.). Fresh from returning home to Melbourne she created the song, which is about “feeling misunderstood and claustrophobic in a relationship.”
QUIÑ Debuts “MATH” Music Video
Fantasy soul singer QUIÑ has debuted her gorgeous new music video “MATH” today. Saving the best for last, Houston rapper Kay Jay unleashes this final offering from his project, “Seize The Moment” which drops this Friday. The Trakksounds-produced track is classic, funky H-town and you may be forgiven for assuming that the pimp reference is your typical misogynistic subject matter but for Kay Jay, it stands for Profit Is My Priority, a mantra the business entrepreneur lives by. Regardless, these three had a blast making this song as you will see by the upcoming video which is already in the can.
GoodcaT, share title track and video on Impose Magazine
Des Moines-based, indie soul band, GoodcaT, share their video for title track, “To Eternity,” from their upcoming full length release. Impose Magazine premiered the video, describing it as a “…beautifully shot exploration of a garden through the eyes of children layered with gorgeous dance and movement. Contrasting light and dark, with the common thread of a layer of chiffon through both visuals bring about an intense idea of innocence lost” (Impose).
Flagship Share New Video for “Mexican Jackpot”

Nnamdi Ogbonnaya will release his new album entitled DROOL on March 3, 2017, a Sooper Records and Father/Daughter Records co-release. DROOL features 13 tracks with guest appearances by Mal Devisa, Julia Steiner (Ratboys), Morimoto, ThrashKitten, and Molly Malloy.
The latest DROOL single “dOn’t turn me Off” features guest vocals by Mal Devisa and ThrashKitten. NPR included it in their Songs We Love series saying it “drips with positivity.” Listen to “dOn’t turn me Off.”
The Tossers Reveal 2017 Plans
Chicago’s favorite sons THE TOSSERS return with a new album, Smash The Windows, nearly a quarter of a century since their inception. The album is set for release on March 3rd, but today the band gives you a first taste with “Erin Go Bragh,” just in time for their 2017 touring plans to begin.
Ursae’s latest release, “Likeness”
Ursae pulls inspiration for “Likeness” from watching his parents through the years. He told The Wild Honey Pie, “The older I get the more I notice certain behaviors in myself, and within my relationships, that I saw in my mom and dad as a kid.” That inherent “likeness” offered insight into how Ursae interacts with others in his own life. “It made me realize that we’re really all carbon copies of our mothers and fathers,” he explained, “I use my parents in ‘Likeness’ as a frame of reference to examine myself and the way I treat the people I care about.” The Wild Honey Pie remarked that the new single offers “a more lush and lively atmosphere that comfortably blends organic and electronic.”

Imaginary People shares “Mr. Hesitance”
Following 2014’s critically acclaimed opening volley EP, composed of espionage-themed singles, and their 2015 politically tinged full-length debut Dead Letterbox, New York’s Imaginary People return with their second full-length release, entitled October Alice, due in April 2017. The album was again produced by Kevin McMahon (Swans, Titus Andronicus, Real Estate), reprising his role from their debut LP.

This past weekend, Regina Spektor joined hundreds of thousands of protesters, performing Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” at the Women’s March on Los Angeles on Saturday, March 21.
Other performers/speakers at the event included U2’s The Edge, Jackson Browne, Miley Cyrus, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jane Fonda, Barbara Streisand, Kerry Washington and Natalie Portman.
Goodbye Honolulu (Toronto garage pop) share new video “Mother to a Brother”
We all know how these band biographies go, right? Friends meet in high school, start jamming, form band in parents’ garage and everyone lives happily ever after.
Well Goodbye Honolulu DID meet in high school but they didn’t just form one band. They formed 5 individual projects and started their own record label while still in school, the 100% local Toronto label Fried Records. While other kids were cramming for exams or wasting away playing video games, the Goodbye Honolulu boys were busy playing in bars (attempting to sneak their underage friends in), honing their live skills, writing songs and self releasing multiple albums a year.

Tashaki Miyaki announces debut album ‘The Dream’
The Los Angeles-based duo Tashaki Miyaki will release their highly anticipated debut album ‘The Dream’ on April 7 via Metropolis Records. This week the band shares the first taste of the upcoming release with the single “Girls On T.V.” “This track emerged out of observing fame culture,” Paige Stark explains. “Things like the emergence of reality TV stardom and social media celebrity have elevated fame culture to a new sphere. We are living in Andy Warhol meets Orwellian vision of the future and I find it terrifying. It’s all about “likes” and numbers and now our country is being run by a monster who was created by this very machine.
