It’s easy to know how to categorize a band like The Sweet Lips. This Aussies 3 member band just released “Out of Nowhere.” This band seems to deliver an uncharacteristic fusion of hard, thrashy guitars and unique songwriting techniques, with a limber rhythm section that keeps the music loose yet powerful. Band members: Daxton Monaghan (Guitars/Vocals, Eamon Pearson (Bass), Ritchie Catlin (Drums).
“From out of nowhere” is one of the hotter hard rocking, partying, brightly flavored rock releases I’ve heard in quite some time. This also tells me that this style of music refuses to die. Mind you It’s not so dark and apocalyptic steeped in the fog of shock rock but it does have a small dose of Soundgarden, Foo Fighters and even Slo Burn. This latest release has got some sold melodies and impressive musicianship to boot – which and hard rocking flair that’s a rarity in today music. Not only are these 3 rock solid musicians, their contributions to the writing and arrangements of all songs is of equal importance. Which is to say nothing of the infections and contagious chemistry they all share no doubt. I really like their band logo – the three headed one. OK so maybe there’s nothing really new or cutting edge here that hasn’t been done before per say, but don’t let that fool you. This latest CD will remind you of Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Fu Machine and Unida. It’s not moody or too serious; it’s quite the opposite evident from the outset as it doesn’t take itself too seriously within the first few tracks “Little Child” and “Method of Science” which are both superlative numbers that get the party started right. Monaghan and company are great rock revivalists, that others (like myself) will lobby hard for. This band can jam, write and play well. Music is a colorful combination of 90’s Alternative Hard Rock with a bit of that classic 80’s Glam Metal. Music and lyrics are all rich in humor laced satire poking fun at the world and full of casual observations. As vocalist Monaghan recalls the higher-registries well. The Sweet Lips have a solid sound that reminds me of both old school Rock n Roll yet with a modern day grunge feel. Tack 3 “Sun Raiser” is another full tilt piece with vocal sonic tandems that really tag team the point across. ”Oxygen” develops well into top flight melodic phrasing and thickly laced harmonies. Some tracks are more alt-rock inflected however all are hard-rock driven rather than the typical melodic-pop posturing we’ve all come to expect. Case in point – this is not Daughtry or Nikelback – not even close. All of this plays into The Sweet Lips and their unique spin on life and overall sensibility. This spin on the world that can jar even the staunchest of listeners. While it’s easy enough to imagine how wonderful a CD like “From out of nowhere” truly is you really have to hear it for yourself.
