Star Wars House (South Korea)
Star Wars, the futuristic tale set in distant space has inspired people for almost 40 years. Everyone can relate to its timeless theme of good vs. evil, and its high-tech gadgets spark the imaginations of fans around the world.
As far as housing goes, Star Wars inspiration usually shows up in a home’s decor. That said, one family in South Korea hired an architect who designed the exterior of their house to look like it would fit in with that far away galaxy. The interior is more earthbound. So, there’s no bumping into a lifelike (or real-life!) Darth Vader.
Hobbit Houses/Holes (Various Locations)
Many architects and do-it-yourselfers have looked to The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings for inspiration. J.R.R. Tolkien created an idyllic setting with his vision of a beautiful shire. Some Hobbit holes are eco-friendly, earth-sheltered homes built underground or into hillsides. One Hobbit-style house in Chester County, Pennsylvania even features a large, round cedar door. Those who want a temporary Middle-earth experience can find Hobbit-themed lodging in the US, the UK, South Africa, and New Zealand.
The Simpsons House (Henderson, Nevada)
Although the movie version of The Simpsons came out 10 years later, in 1997 the builders of this replica of the cartoon family’s home re-created as many details as possible. According to Northern Comfort Aurora windows and doors supplier, they captured everything from the tilted sailboat painting, to the bay windows. The house was one of two prizes in a raffle. The winner chose the cash prize instead.
UP House (Herriman, Utah)
Like The Simpsons house, this home is a replica. Disney-Pixar gave permission for its construction, and the builders had to take some license with the interior since the film did not depict all rooms. Even though attaching balloons will not allow the house to take flight, details such as the bright colors, the weather vane, the wood staircase, and the non-standard front door are sure to make dreams soar.
When it comes to out-of-the-ordinary living, books and movies can be fuel for fantasy, opening the minds’ doors of home builders and buyers.
