Indie rockers Menomena are playing the Variety Playhouse this Friday. The Portland, Oregon trio comprised of Brent Knopf, Justin Harris and Danny Seim released their first EP called Rose back in 2001. Since then they’ve released four full length albums and a couple EPs.
Their latest effort Mines is an eclectic assemblage of stripped down ballads and richly textured anthems — from down tempo poignancy to rollicking defiance. The diversity of the sound is connected by the earthy tone that pervades the album. On “Queen Black Acid” Brent Knopf croons his emotive vocals sung in his reedy tenor, frail but intense, this song is a slow burn. On the funky “Oh Pretty Boy You’re Such a Big Boy”, there is the cascading piano with staccato baritone and alto sax notes. On the beautiful “INTIL” they bring sentimental piano and haunting vocals.
There is a mix of samples layered with sax, guitar, drums, and piano through out the album. At their shows they are known for adding MIDI samples into the live instrumentation to duplicate the lush textures of their studio work.
Menomena are perfectionists when crafting their music. Their creative process involves the digital loop recorder which is a program written by Knopf in the visual programming language for music called Max. They start with the tempo, add in vocals and then drums and layer all the other instruments.
Come on out this Friday night to enjoy Menomena’s lush musical landscapes at one of the best venues Atlanta has to offer.
