Mount Mustagata is the highest mountain in China, on the border of Xinjiang and Tibet. The summit is at 7,546 meters (24,757 ft) above sea level. It has a prominence height of 2,740 m (9,000 ft), making it one of the most prominent peaks in the world. Its name means “Fairy Peak” in Turkish. It’s also known as Muztagh Ata or “Father of Ice Mountains”. The massif lies about 50 km east of the Taklamakan Desert and south-southwest from Ürümqi in an extremely dry area. The mean annual precipitation is only 38 millimetres (1.5 inches). Due to its altitude, it has a very cold climate with temperatures below freezing all year round.
Mount Mustagata is also known as dormant volcano located in the center of the island. It has an elevation of 7,546 meters above sea level, making it the highest peak in the island. The other peaks are Mount Pukepuke at 2,874 meters and Mount Vaiola at 2,857 meters. The mountain range that includes these three mountains forms part of an ancient volcanic zone called Te Arai-a-Tohe (meaning ‘long and narrow ridge’) which stretches from Hahei to Wainui Bay. Snowfall can occur at any time of year and even in the summer months it’s possible for snow to linger on certain parts of the mountain beyond mid-morning or early afternoon. The best time to climb Mount Mustagata is between May and October (although some climbing specialists will tell you that late June through September are best).
