Transit Tapes (for women who move furniture around) by Lucy Kruger
Written by Lucy Kruger and forged in a tiny 34°c rehearsal space in Berlin, ‘Transit Tapes’ melts dreamy indie rock with dark folk and returns 12 pensive tracks exploring restlessness and a yearning to feel alive. This project is the first time Kruger has worked with drummer Martin Perret, guitarist Liú Mottes and bassist Andreas Miranda, who form The Lost Boys.
Hillsburn releases new album, Slipping Away
Hillsburn’s latest album is a portrait of a society fraying at the seams, and it feels alarmingly familiar in the COVID era.
Recorded in Vancouver as the pandemic set in in March 2020, Slipping Away confronts the inane monotony of so much of our collective existence, the struggle to get by, and our reliance on alcohol/television/food/pills/fill-in-the-blank to provide the much needed respite that allows us to keep going. On its face, this might seem like a bleaker vision than songwriter Paul Aarntzen has previously put forward, but the characters that inhabit these songs aren’t hapless victims. They know the score. Their pain is cast not as requiem, but as prelude — there is a sense that they take stock in order to chart a new course. There is, after all, freedom in seeing things as they are.

Downtempo electronic duo ERA C are releasing their latest album DELIRIA on the 28th of May via Future Archive Recordings. Accompanying the album is the outstanding track, ‘don’t call me from Los Angeles’. The single follows the release of ‘0-60 mph’, which was accompanied by a live video shot at home, as well as the Arms and Sleepers edit of their single ‘DELIRIA’, which was mixed by Sun Glitters. The album will also be available to purchase on limited edition milky clear vinyl, with only 250 copies cut. ERA C is the collaborative project of Mirza Ramic from the well-known Arms and Sleepers duo and Sofia Insua of the established band Easy Easy.

‘Magnolia’ – Timid, the Brave Single
Magnolia captures the initial thrill and nervousness of new love. I wrote most of the song on the walk home from my first date with my wife. It was early May, and we had spent all afternoon wandering the botanical gardens together. There was this air of uncertainty that all first dates have, where you seem to be connecting but you can’t help but ask yourself, “Are they feeling what I’m feeling right now? As he did for his 2020 full-length Signals, Davies teamed up with acclaimed visual artist Jesse Draxler (Daughters, Poppy) for the artwork. The stark, black-and-white piece that Draxler contributed for the cover of Spies perfectly captures the mood of the record. Eyes are cut out, disassociated from faces, their gazes made inscrutable.
