Watch Girl Friday’s official video for “Earthquake” fromAndrogynous Mary

Today, Girl Friday has delivered a surrealistic visual for “Earthquake,” the powerhouse lead single from Androgynous Mary, their acclaimed album of 2020 out now on Hardly Art.

Girl Friday’s Vera Ellen, who directed the video, offers this, “The greatest love story is between a song and a video. I wanted to deconstruct the creative process. How do ideas find each other? What happens when the artist lets outside forces get in the way of an idea? How is an idea affected by us, the audience and our expectations? What does an idea have to do to become it’s complete, purest, self. Beyond anything, it’s a story of fighting for true liberation. This will look different for everyone but I hope people can project their own struggle onto the story, and relish in the freedom experienced by the characters (if only for a moment).”

Pino Palladino and Blake Mills to unveil new album Notes With Attachments 3/12

“With a song like this, built in layers, at various points along the road you look around and go: what is this? Where is the composition? Sometimes you end up drawing the blueprints of the house after it’s fully been built,” says Mills about “Just Wrong.” That process touches every song on the record, which typically began with Palladino’s own melodic and rhythmic language and developed outward with references shared by the two musicians from West African and Cuban music, funk, jazz, and English folk.

Son Little Releases New Single “Phantom Killer”, Watch New Lyric Video Now

Born Aaron Earl Livingston, Little first came to international prominence with his self-titled debut which was released in 2015 on ANTI- Records. While Little’s collaborations with The Roots and RJD2 had already helped him make a name for himself by that point in his adopted hometown of Philadelphia, critics on both sides of the pond were quick to recognize the unique power of Little’s solo recordings, which stripped the past for parts that could be reconstituted into something wholly new and original. NPR hailed Little’s “impeccably crafted songs” as “honest and unpretentious,” while The Independent proclaimed him “a formidable talent,” and Vice declared that he was “dissolving the barrier between R&B and rock ‘n’ roll one tearjerker at a time.”

Jane Inc (member of U.S. Girls ffo: Sorry, Melody’s Echo Chamber) | Shares new single, “Steel”

Tipped so far by The Line of Best Fit, NPR, Brooklyn Vegan and Earmilk, unlike Carlyn’s previous musical output, this is solely her project, written and produced by herself. She worked with a few extra hands on the record – members of U.S. Girls, Aquakultre and Scott Hardware contributed, as well as esteemed Toronto producer, Steve Chahley (Badge Èpoque Ensemble, Kathryn Williams) – but the fact that this is solely down to her is pretty representative of how deeply personal this record is to Bezic, emerging as an unraveling of her views on mental health and the role which social media/the internet can play in damaging it.

Sara Watkins To Release “Under The Pepper Tree” March 26th – Variety Premieres “Pure Imagination” Video Today

Sara admits that she initially felt conflicted about making a children’s record until she realized that perhaps this album could impact a young listener in the same manner as the music from her own childhood affected her. The nostalgic and gentle Under the Pepper Tree offers a comforting record for those moments as daily rhythms fade into nightly rituals — and when a child’s imagination comes to life. “I want this album to be a place of calm, imagination, and relief,” Sara says. “Some days are perfect and things are a dream and make you feel like a superhero. And some days are just… such a challenge. I feel like this record has a place in both of those days, and I really hope that these recordings find a place in kids’ hearts, and become as special as they are to me.”

Whispering Sons Share New Track “Surface”

Combining bleak and jarring imagery, the band comment of the video: “The theme of isolation in a cyclical and circling world was used by combining images of a woman singing in bright white light alongside flashing sceneries of destruction, a lost city, stone formations and rough structured landscapes. It’s the result of an instinctive search by photographer Sybren Vanoverberghe and filmmaker Jonas Hollevoet for images in which no humanity can be found.”

Juliet Quick (Brooklyn) shares “Circles” single | Announces ‘Glass Years’ EP

About the song, Quick states: ” “Circles” is about filtering out the feedback of others and just living inside yourself, even if that isn’t always the easiest place to be. I have trouble doing that—I have had this lifelong compulsion to be perceived as ‘good,’ even to people who I don’t think are ‘good!’ The particular kind of depression I was in when I wrote this song, though, gave me some relief from that at times. It was much more difficult to care about pleasing people. There are a handful of external voices that appear in the song—advice-givers, pedantic men, crust punks—who are kind of gently ignored. It is definitely a sad song but it is also about freedom.”

“If the cottage industry of 1970s worship in hard rock and metal ever needs an official ambassador, Tatsu Mikami should be in serious contention. (…) Mikami shows off his solo abilities during an extended bass break in “Captain Frost” while guitarists Arisa and Takenori Hoshi duel and synchronize with equal aplomb throughout “Black Sheep” and “Quicksand Planet”. The laid back nature of the music doesn’t apply to the musicianship; for a genre known to excuse sloppy playing with ‘it’s just a vibe, man’ platitudes, there’s nary a sour note or careless moment to be found.” enthuse Invisible Oranges.

Quiet Canyons shares indie-folk single “Panicked Mistakes”

Following the release of debut single “We Overflow”, Quiet Canyons, the new project from singer-songwriter Tim Willams, shares “Panicked Mistakes” out today. The song is an on edge, acoustic number centered around working through self-doubt. On the track, Williams is able to make an acoustic guitar sound heavy, a nice juxtaposition to his soft-toned vocals. Both singles can be found on Quiet Canyons’ upcoming self-titled album set for release on February 12th via Trash Casual.

NYC collective MICHELLE release “FYO”

“FYO” is about belonging to different worlds but feeling rejected by both. Growing up as a mixed-race minority in the US, my self concept was warped by other people telling me what I am and am not, pushing and pulling me between identities. Although my feelings of cultural dissonance still ebb and flow, now I have the vocabulary, support system, and perspective to unpack that inner conflict on my own terms.

Reuben Koops | ‘Like the Movies’ – NEW SINGLE

After a three year hiatus, Reuben Koops is back with a stunning new single Like the Movies, due for release on December 10. The modest, yet captivating acoustic track is a departure from more recent band-oriented material; back to his singer/songwriter roots.

Speaking of the creative process, Reuben explains, “this song was about relating to some of my earlier songs that were just acoustic guitar and vocals; keeping those elements at the forefront. Songs have to be strong enough that they don’t need too many bells and whistles to be ‘a good song’. I worked with Jack McLaine (Sumner) to engineer the track. We recorded as little as possible and relied on those organic elements. I think we’ve been able to achieve what we wanted whilst still featuring some great musicians on the track to support it”.
