Holiday Magic from Blackmore’s Night “Christmas Eve”
Ritchie Blackmore didn’t exactly retire his Fender Stratocaster, but he plays acoustic guitar almost exclusively in Blackmore’s Night. His acoustic guitar melodies and Night’s clear, ethereal voice blend with a host of instruments such as mandolins, keyboards, pennywhistles, violins, tambourines, military drums, and hurdy-gurdies. Blackmore once described the band’s sound as “Mike Oldfield meets Enya.” Blackmore and Night met in about 1989 when Deep Purple played soccer against employees of a Long Island radio station where she worked. Night, a former model, studied communications at the New York Institute of Technology and had her own radio show. Blackmore and Night discovered they shared a love of Renaissance culture and quickly became a couple.

Fresh off their co-headlining summer tour with the Goo Goo Dolls, Train performed at CBS’s Sunset on the Beach season premiere event for “Hawaii Five-0” and “Magnum P.I.” in Waikiki, Hawaii, where the two artists first announced their collaboration on the forthcoming track. Early next year, Grey will join Train on their sold-out Sail Across The Sun Cruise, which sets sail on February 14-18, 2020 and will travel between Miami, Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas.

Ethan explains, “’Event Horizon’ is probably my favorite on the record. My wife is a Kurt Vonnegut Jr. fan and told me to read Sirens of Titan; that sci-fi influence is in the song. It’s also my homage to more jazz-influenced hip-hop like Kendrick Lamar, one of my favorite current artists. It’s about being in a room with someone and not being able to put your finger on what they’re thinking, and the relationship between that and an event horizon, this pull where nothing can ever get out as what it really is. And yes, I know it’s also a movie from the ’90s; I looked at the DVD cover while making the song and decided I will never watch it. But I honor it.”

These tracks represent a wide span of Gus’s music. This album combines roughly a dozen tracks of unreleased music with several other tracks that come from a variety of self-released albums/mixtapes. At first, I had put together about a dozen tracks that I felt went well together because they were clusters of tracks that Gus had made with a variety of collaborators and which related to each other in both a chronological and musical manner.

Fronted by the charismatic Jamaican-born singer/songwriter Nee Nee Rushie, The Big Takeover blend Jamaican pop traditions with the spirit of Motown and uptown sophistication of 21st-century retro soul. This latest track is the second single from the band’s upcoming fifth studio album, Spilling Water, and showcases their talented brass section and a catchy rhythmic flow to create the perfect backdrop to Rushie’s earnest vocals. “‘Where Did I Go Wrong?’ is a personal experience about being rejected by someone that you know wants to be with you,” Rushie says. “It explores the complication of feeling someone pushing you away, but reaching out to you at the same time.”
