Nashville-based independent pop artist Michelle Renae returns with “Pretty as Vegas,” a synth pop new single arriving September 18. Written and produced by Renae, the track transforms the confusion of modern dating into a night at the casino, where love is a gamble and everyone looks a little better under the city lights.
Inspired by Renae’s upbringing in Las Vegas, “Pretty as Vegas” pairs dark ’80s-influenced synths, stacked vocals, groovy guitar and casino-floor sounds with a playful but cynical look at romance. Michael Jackson’s sound and showmanship were a major sonic influence on the track, particularly in its rhythmic pop production and dramatic energy.
At the center of the song is the lyric, “Everybody’s pretty as Vegas under the city lights,” capturing the contrast between appearance and reality that runs throughout the track. Its chorus pushes the metaphor further: “The gamble of your life / Lay a heart I’ll give you mine”
“Pretty as Vegas” also marks the beginning of a larger creative world for Renae, who is developing a body of music inspired by the city where she grew up and using Las Vegas as a backdrop for stories about relationships, ambition, illusion and human connection.
