Jazz and orchestra music unite in harmonious fashion on Jake Hertzog’s latest release titled ‘Ozark Concerto’. Hertzog designated these pieces for jazz orchestra, guitar and string quartet and the result is magnificent! ‘Ozark Concerto’ is split up into seven parts and each composition tells its own unique story.
This large-scale project includes Jake Hertzog on guitar with conductor Susumu Watanabe and The Ozark Jazz Philharmonic. There is also a talented cast of instrumentalists on this record and each member brings interesting dynamics to each piece. Jazz meets classical in a most profound and beautiful way on ‘Ozark Concerto’.
A very robust presence and a vast universe of sound can be heard on the opening number, “Part I”. A big burst of energy hits you right from the beginning on “Part I” as Jake Hertzog and his musical accompaniment explore many elements. Get ready for an enticing melody and catchy chords on “Part II”. Next, a striking beat, tempo & tone instantly sparks your eardrums on “Part III”. The musical direction is just superb on “Part III” and can be called a star-studded production! All players are coming together brilliantly on “Part III” to produce one magical performance for the ages! “Part IV” is short but sweet but evokes much wonder in 2:37 thanks to masterful instrumentation and top-tier orchestration. Next, Jake Hertzog & company are taking you on a thoughtful journey on “Part V” where the plot is thickening and the road less travelled is full of wonderful surprises. The project ends on an extremely high note with “Part VII” with an elegant touch and perfect orchestration. A fantastic finale can be heard as Jake Hertzog and his talented cast bring it all home with style & class.
A standing ovation and a bravo are merited by the end of ‘Ozark Concerto’. Jake Hertzog takes the art of music to another level with this release by highlighting assorted styles and instruments. There is a distinct rhyme & reason behind the making of this seven-part album and it’s one invigorating experience to say the least. This project wouldn’t be possible without the generous grant from the South Arts Organization, funded by the Doris Duke Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. ‘Ozark Concerto’ is a true masterpiece for today and deserves the utmost respect and recognition.
