Step back into the golden era of jazz as Chloé Perrier and her French Heart Jazz Band prepare to enchant audiences with their much-anticipated “Gatsby in Paris” Part II. Set to take place on Saturday, January 12, 2024, at the Triad Theater in New York City, this extraordinary event promises a seamless fusion of French chansons and American jazz standards, presented with a fresh twist. Join us for an intimate conversation with Chloé Perrier, where she reveals her inspirations, creative process, and what makes this show a must-see experience for jazz lovers everywhere.
- How did the idea for “Gatsby in Paris” Part II come about, and what has been the journey leading to this performance?
Many fans requested a revival of “Gatsby in Paris,” so I decided to create Part II. It includes some of their favorites as well as new songs from the same period (1920s to 1940s), and even a few from the 1950s, as I didn’t want to perform the exact same show.
- Who are your top influences in shaping the sound and style of the French Heart Jazz Band?
I am a huge fan of Josephine Baker, Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet, and also Blossom Dearie, Eartha Kitt, and Helen Merrill. I considered forming another band to sing these artists’ songs when the French consulate in NYC asked me to perform at a 1930s-themed party, leading to the creation of the French Heart Jazz Band. Plus, I really enjoy dressing up!
- What unique challenges and joys come with performing in both French and English?
The challenge is not to mix the two languages…haha. The joy is that each language offers different sounds and allows me to play with them while singing.
I want to learn Portuguese for the same reason; I love singing Bossa in French and English, but it sounds so much better in Portuguese!
- If someone could only attend one of your shows, what makes this upcoming performance unmissable?
I hope they leave with memories of fun and happiness. Living in today’s world can be tough, and my goal is to bring joy, even if just for the duration of the show. Hopefully, this joy lingers, and they will return for more!
- What’s on your playlist right now that inspires your work?
Django Reinhardt, Eydie Gormé whom I just discovered, Jean Constantin, Beverly Kenney, Mel Tormé, and plenty of Piaf, Blossom Dearie, Trenet, and my dear friend Tatiana Eva-Marie are all on my playlist!
- How do you adapt the energy of live performance to capture the spirit of a bygone era like the 1920s?
I’m not entirely sure I understand the question (still French…haha), but for me, this repertoire possesses its own energy. It was created to be performed live and to make people dance. If you have a vivid imagination and let it guide you, you’ll find yourself back in the 1920s in a heartbeat just listening to it!
- What has been the most memorable audience reaction to your music so far?
A few years ago, a couple told me after a show that my music was perfect for both dancing and making love—they were dancing and kissing in the back of the jazz club all night! I also love seeing children’s happiness when we perform. I recently sang at the Rose Parade party, where one little girl was jumping throughout the entire set, and another brought me a flower after gazing at me. This proves that this music is timeless and for all ages.
- What’s next for Chloé Perrier and the French Heart Jazz Band after this show?
Hopefully, a big tour, definitely a new album, and more dates with my “Joie de Vivre Cabaret.” Check it out!
