A slew of genres within a bluesy framework defines BMK’s reflective “Tales of the Upright & The Electric Pulse.” Songs get stripped bare to the core essentials. Rhythms have a timeless grace. Thoughtfully avoiding trends, they go for a timelessness, feeling like they could have emerged from any decade. Vocals have a world-weary cadence, lending the lyricism that additional punch. Melodies are infused within the angular grooves, making the tracks feel like they are about to explode as the tense energy releases. Going for this back and forth, he keeps things unexpected because, while quiet, the evolution feels completely unpredictable.

“Tales of the Upright” starts the album with this majestic grace, nimbly stepping about in a spirited dance. Darkness looms throughout the haunted bow work of “A Strung-Out Story,” where a classical cadence blooms. Ambiance reigns supreme on the peaceful “Rolling Sunset.” Using space to maximum effect, the spacious and minimal “Goodnight, Farewell” has a noir-like demeanor. Infusing an electrical storm emerges with the understated “The Electric Pulse.” Hard stomps permeate “Hey There, Momma,” allowing a degree of sorrow into the equation. Taut funk of the post-punk variety echoes throughout the vast space of “Killing Groove.” On “The Light is Winning,” a spaced-out fanfare enters the fray. Neatly bringing it to a close is the dance-infused “Capricorn Dance (Tatanka Summer Dance Remix).”
BMK refines the importance of intimacy as “Tales of the Upright & The Electric Pulse” features an inherent loveliness with simple, understated gestures.
