The Joy Tape gives listeners a full scope of the young artist, channeling his brand of spiritually uninhibited rap inspired by 60s soul, 70s jazz, and late 90s hip-hop mixed with Detroit-inspired House, Gospel, and bounce.

SURFBORT RELEASE SURPRISE ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN SONG, “HAPPY HAPPY HALLOWEEN”
“Halloween is our favorite holiday and we celebrate it everyday so we wanted to make an extra spooky song to celebrate the ghouls and ghosts” says front woman, Dani Miller. The band went in thinking they were going to do a cover, but their ever-brilliant manager and album producer Linda Perry had other ideas, “Linda just started playing spooky Dracula noises on the keys and the rest is history. Happy Happy Halloween.” The song gives a gnarly twist on the Halloween songs we listened to as kids, think Monster Mash, but with the psyche of Freddy Kruger, name-checking their favourite goth idols Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy and Christian Death. The video, shot and directed by Perry, features the band in vivacious costumes (bass guitarist Nick Arnold as Bob Ross is a must-see) and really shows the members in their unearthly element. It’s not hard to see why Surftbort owns Halloween.

The lyrics of this song have a lot to do with my experience growing up in Santa Cruz, California, a place several of us in the band actually have a strong connection to. Shortly following the recording of this album, the California wildfires of Summer 2020 destroyed many of the places that were really special to me, and as a result, this song took on an even deeper meaning.”

Punch Brothers’ “Any Old Time,” from Hell on Church Street, out Today
Recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio in November 2020, during a time of great uncertainty, Hell on Church Street was intended as both its own work of art and a gift to Rice, who died that Christmas. Punch Brothers said of Tony Rice and Church Street Blues: “No record (or musician) has had a greater impact on us, and we felt compelled to cover it in its entirety, with the objective of interacting with it in the same spirit of respect-fueled adventure that Tony brought to each of its pre-existing songs.”
