Chris Jones & The Night Drivers’ “Leave It At The Gate” brings honesty, authenticity
Chris Jones is a storyteller who has long used acoustic music — mostly bluegrass, mostly original — as his medium. But whether it’s a wistful country ballad or a banjo-driven groove, one of his own or from the pen of a Music Row legend, the honesty and authenticity in his musical voice are — just like his warm, nuanced baritone itself — unmistakable. So, too, are the honesty and authenticity of the stories he tells, and the latest release from Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, “Leave It At The Gate,” is also the latest illustration of the way that his music is rooted in real life.
Starfish from the coral reefs of Fruit Island
Led by the exuberant melodies of cross-tapping guitarist Marcos Mena, the LA duo standards make meticulous instrumental math-rock whose effervescent riffs teem with sunny enthusiasm. On the band’s debut full-length, Fruit Island, standards deftly retool math-rock’s unforgiving, challenging tendencies into a style that is both danceable and compositionally profound. Drummer Forrest Rice’s boisterous chops complement Mena’s unpredictable melodies, grounding the unusual self-dueling riffs and balancing the bright compositions with tasteful fills and immaculate syncopations.

Skittish Announce New LP, Share single “Car Crash Companion”
Jeff Noller has been the creative force behind the band Skittish for over ten years. Sprung from the lake country of Minnesota in 2007, Skittish has earned critical acclaim for the Paul Simon meets Arcade Fire blend of bedroom folk-rock. Choosing the name Skittish was a nod to the kinship and calm Noller has found around animals, and less so around people. Other musicians seem to be the exception to that preference, because although he writes and records on his own, many talented Midwest musicians have joined Noller in the Skittish lineup over the years.

Lewis Del Mar shares new track and video “TV,” AUGUST out 8/21
“Much of the ethos behind Lewis Del Mar is rooted in the practice of collage, and ‘TV’ touches on this concept from two angles,” Lewis Del Mar says. “First, the lyrics are a societal stream of conscious that weave a haywire line through disparate scenes and ideas: the water cycle, call centers, crowded subways, my mother’s voice. The song seeks connection in chaos, much like scrolling, flipping the channel. The recording itself is also its own collage. The drums, vocals, and guitar were recorded live in the room, while the synths and samples were programmed around this foundation to invoke the saturated and layered sensation of over-consumption that we’ve all grown accustomed to.”
