Jude Gwynaire takes on a distinct dancefloor roots aesthetic with the force of nature fervor of “Sun Café”. Within this singular effort, he draws from the dancefloor’s past while pointing illustriously towards its future. This means that elements of Giorgio Moroder’s disco flair sits alongside neo-disco revivalists like Todd Terje. By blending these instincts together, he creates something that teems with pure joy. Over the course of the album the almost mid-century flair of some of the arrangements helps to give them a sense of sophistication. So much color is incorporated within these pieces allowing for a bit of play to enter into the fray.

A sheer rush to behold “Inanna Queen of Heaven” opens things up with a truly theatrical flair, as the pulsing energy becomes outright palpable. Elements of jazz house emerge on the splendid strut of “Saturn-by-the-Sea”. Distortion reigns supreme on the undue swagger of “The Eighth Tower” where a bit of darkness is brought in for good measure. Quite loose and carefree is the psych stylings of “Paradise Star Inc.”. Going for a gorgeous romp the celebratory “Breakfast with Alice” absolutely swings. By far the highlight comes from the intense journey of “The River” where his thoughtful synthesizer at times touches upon Tangerine Dream territory. Gentle waves wash over the listener on the surf inclinations of “Sirens of Atlantis”. Lovely melodies intermingle on the triumphant finale “The Hanging Gardens of Titan”.
“Sun Café” shows off Jude Gwaynaire’s uncanny knowledge of the dancefloor’s history, creating something that feels very much timeless.
