Taking a year to conceptualize, Donaldson adds, “The songs that were chosen for this EP allowed us to find ourselves as a band, as individual musicians, and the direction we want to take our music. Each of us wants our music to have lyrics that people can connect with while remaining poetic and thoughtful, and to surround those lyrics with a powerful rock sound with lots of energy and dynamics. Musically we worked to create a sound that was familiar in some ways to our first album, Fables, while also evolving into a sound that was natural to all of the members of the band.”

Sunsleeper Celebrate New Single/Music Video “Better Now”
From the forthcoming album comes singles “Soften Up,” “No Cure,” and, the latest release, “Better Now”; this most recent track details the duality of lead singer Jeffery Mudgett’s headspace. On the one hand, he is feeling guilty about taking forever to propose to his wife, delaying their future with his financial and emotional baggage; but on the other hand, he knows these things are miniscule compared to the happiness they bring each other. Despite being one of the most upbeat-sounding songs Mudgett has ever written, lyrically, it leans back toward their despondent comfort zone.
With American Psychological Association statistics showing 75 percent of adults worldwide report experiencing moderate to high levels of stress in the past month, and nearly half claiming their stress has increased in the past year*, people are looking for relief from everyday pressures and anxiety. Many are now finding comfort, peace and tranquility by retreating into The River of Calm.
“Thrashing Thu The Passion” will be released via French Kiss Records on August 16th and finds the band back in buoyant mood. The record rarely lets up, and is almost relentlessly up-beat, and has the feeling of a band finding their way back to each other in the studio, to have fun writing as a group again. No messing about or over-thinking the studio recording process, just getting in, writing, enjoying it and releasing it. That new-found spontaneity seems to be working well for them. Everywhere from Pitchfork to Uncut and DIY magazine have shown their excitement for it, so it’d be great to hear what you think too.
“I wrote the lyrics for this song, and produced it alongside Max-Antoine Gendron. We always keep our recording sessions very private. We write everything at his house in his home studio. I’m not a fan of big studios for writing sessions – I think it puts too much pressure on the creative flow to manifest itself. Ultimately, all you need is a computer, basic instruments, and a mic. The rest is bullshit, especially nowadays with so much technology at our fingertips.”
Originally from Austin, TX, Kelly has made a series of impassioned moves that have thrown his sense of belonging into question, as quickly as they’ve consolidated it once again. A life of pivots has made for sincere and affecting writing on this upcoming body of work. New track ‘Cracked Porcelain’ explores the emotional tug-of-war between socio-cultural binaries of sexual identity through the lens of an LGBTQ+ union.
