Mark Ambuter Explains His New Single ‘Laughing and Crying’

“Easily in my top 3 most played songs of all time… So many people would consider this track amongst my best work…

This song is absolutely rooted in the 80’s I’m proud of that fact and it’s my love-note to that era… it’s also based on a true story it’s about a night I spent alone on a 300 ft. Steamship which was owned by my family at the time… It was during one of the worst storms ever to hit the coast of Southern California. That night there wasn’t one fishing pier left standing between Huntington Beach and Santa Monica…

Long Story short… I was alone on the SS Catalina Steamship in Long Beach when the anchor chain was cut in a bay full of oil tankers, with just me on board with a dead radio and no way to call for help.

I was Praying for help while my family and my Girlfriend at the time who new I was on board stood in horror at the end of a fishing pier trying desperately to spot the ship so they could know I was alright… On most nights, it was visible from the pier they were on. They were searching for me in the rain that night… the Ship… it sat anchored to the bottom of the ocean just one mile off the coast.

However the Storm took me on a wild ride that night trapped on board because earlier that night my small skiff broke loose, it was tied to the side of the ship it didn’t stand a chance in the storm of staying put. I was on board with just my guitar and a prayer to come home. I always had my guitar on board when I would go out there…

I survived Thanks to the coast guard, I made it off the ship the next day, writing “Laughing and Crying” occupied my mind during the worst of the storm. To this day this song is a reminder of what I went through that crazy night.”
