Lauv said about the track, “I wrote sad forever at a time when I was extremely low. I was dealing with depression and OCD but hadn’t really recognized or gotten the help I needed. It’s an ongoing journey with ups and downs and finding stability is a process that I’m still heavily working on. This song was written in a dark place but by donating all proceeds to mental health organizations I can only hope it helps others take their first step to ask for help too.”

“‘Shinin” is a song about how love and devotion can lift you up so you shine brighter than you could alone. It is a song about gratitude and acknowledgement that real love can take you to the next level. I had a few ideas that I brought over to (collaborator) Stoll Vaughan to work on in Los Angeles right before we started the sessions in Muscle Shoals for Down to the River. We wrote this late addition and it fit perfectly with the list of tunes we had already put together. I’m glad it worked out the way it did.” Duane Betts told Rolling Stone Country, who had the exclusive premiere of the track.
