Piano Virtuoso, Ben Ridley, Re-Invents Himself As Diverse Modern Pop Storyteller

Having excelled as a classical pianist, Ben Ridley now enters a new chapter in his musical life – that of a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. Taking inspiration from the likes of Todd Rundgren and Randy Newman, as well as keeping hold of his nuanced, classical training, he has spent years analysing the craft of song-writing in order to deliver this: Dancing Mood, the lead track from his forthcoming album, Sing.

Though Sing is a piece of work designed to be experienced as a whole, Dancing Mood is a perfect introduction to Ben Ridley and his intricately arranged snapshots of life, love and regret. Playing every instrument and taking care of all vocal duties, a casual, unassuming piano intro breaks out into a twisting, many-layered catchy pop nugget, which has the timelessness of all great song-writing. With a stylish accompanying lyric video, this is a perfect primer to the Ben Ridley experience.

The track samples the Extra P (Large Professor) remix of Common Sense’s 1995 Resurrection. She speaks on her most vivid childhood memories growing up in her Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Nello opens the track by recreating the scene of when she saw Lil Kim’s tears as Biggie’s body past through his block for the final time. She also drops a reference to Nas shouting out her block on You Wouldn’t Understand off his 2012 album Life Is Good. Nello exhibits her great storytelling skills over this nostalgic cut.

Eric Church’s MR. MISUNDERSTOOD Certified RIAA Platinum

Bucking convention hasn’t always been the popular path, but for Eric Church there is no question about where he prioritizes his relationship with his fans. He showed this when he sent his 2015 album, Mr. Misunderstood, to members of his fan club, dubbed the Church Choir, before surprise announcing it at the 2015 CMA Awards and putting it on sale to the public. It is a model that, although untraditional, has developed a steadfast audience of devoted Choir members earning RIAA Platinum certification for Mr. Misunderstood, allowing the fourth single from the album, “Round Here Buzz” to reach No. 1 on the Country Airplay Charts and making way for Church to perform at the 2018 GRAMMY Awards.

I was initially skeptical, but I loved the quiet, warm foundation it gave the song.” Like a romantic gondola ride or evening under the stars, “In Memory” feels like a welcome embrace, although the lyrics tell a different story…like pushing your date out of the boat.

He puts all these those skillsets to work with Out Past the Wires, whose 22 songs mix poetry and prose in equal doses. The result is the strongest album of his career, filled with electrified moments that channel Bruce Springsteen’s anthemic stomp, lyrics worthy of Leonard Cohen’s work, and quietly heartbreaking moments grounded in Picott’s acoustic guitar and road-worn voice.

Spring 2017 a hard-hitting rock outfit rose from the remnants of a train crash in Ålesunds dimly lit back alleys. Hella Rebelliön plays punk with references to several of the 21st century’s greatest Norwegian giants.

The tracks are steeped in a drive and agressiveness that draws parallells to bands like Silver and Zugly. The vocalist Markus sounds like a pissed off Hank Von Helvete at his best/worst.

Magnet Magazine has premiered the new single from Quicksilver Daydream entitled ‘Raven’s Eye’. When talking about the track frontman/composer Adam Lytle says, “‘Raven’s Eye’ came together during an acoustic practice at Cole’s old apartment in Greenpoint. We were at the point, as a band, where we could let collective intuition lead. I played a riff that was more aggressive than anything we’d done up to that point. Upon hearing it, the group jumped in, and the structure rode in on the resulting wave of energy. Lyrically, it’s a Bergman-like tale of an encounter with the personification of death. Ever since I can remember, my dreams have been haunted by thoughts of mortality. Nothing too morbid, but moving nonetheless. They serve as a reminder of the brevity of life and the virtue of living every day as if it’s the last. ‘Raven’s Eye’ attempts to bring that chase to life.”

Having formed at a New Year’s Eve party and debuted live days later, it’s fair to say Swedish quintet Cat Princess don’t conform to the usual status quo, and in new retro banger Fly On Your Wall (released 23rd January via Rama Lama Records), their combination of modern indie pop and 80’s inspired art-pop really backs up that theory.

Recorded at Atomic Sound in Brooklyn in December 2016, the album showcases Duchovny’s storytelling and playing: “I feel like this Album presents a real growth lyrically and musically from the first and I can’t wait to get it out there.”

Jean Grae & Quelle Chris Announce Album

This morning NPR announced that polymath power couple Jean Grae & Quelle Chrs have a new album titled ‘Everything’s Fine’ coming March 30th.

“Everything’s fine.” It’s an automated pleasantry. An emotional shorthand that spares us from unpacking the truth in casual conversation. But – everything is definitely NOT fine. Jean Grae and Quelle Chris deliver this message with a deft balance of withering satire, abstractism and knife cuts on their first full-length hip hop album together as longtime creative partners. As the phrase repeats itself throughout the album it becomes a twisted and empty self-help mantra that’s harrowing and often hilarious. Jean Grae and Quelle Chris are polymath MCs, producers, writers, directors, comedians (and so much more) and ‘Everything’s Fine’ will be released March 30 on Mello Music Group.

Add to that Detroit heavy hitter Jimmy Lucido on the drums (The Strays/ TVT records) in their combined years of touring, these road veterans have supported heavyweights from Smashing Pumpkins to the The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Alice Glass unveils “CEASE AND DESIST” today

“This song is a call to arms for all survivors,” says Glass. “But being a survivor often means feeling afraid, it means sometimes feeling worthless, like you can’t go on. We need to fight back against those who have victimized us and against the feelings that tell us to give up inside. Sometimes we think we deserve the pain others have inflicted on us. This song is what I need to tell myself to get through each day, and what I hope other survivors can remember when they feel like they can’t make it through the darkness of their own recovery. Every day is a fight.”

Long before they were a band, Montreal duo The Beat Escape took a small first step towards a longer journey at a university video class. “We made a short oddball work; a video piece that followed two characters through a psychedelic waking dream,” say Beat escapists Addy Weitzman and Patrick A Boivin of their founding collaboration. Many other projects and outside collaborations later, the duo have crafted a debut album their younger selves would be proud of. The sublimely immersive Life Is Short the Answer’s Long plays like a waking dream of near-psychedelic electronic pop, moving to its own beat in the push-pull of forward motion and submerged reflection.
