The title of O’Connor’s classic short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” has always sounded like a country song, so it’s no surprise that Southern songwriters consider the author to be an artistic inspiration. Ramey – a deputy district attorney in Montgomery, Alabama, before she became a singer – counts her as an influence and incorporates many of the author’s hallmarks into her own work. Thoughtfully sketched characters, biblical references and the grotesque abound on Ramey’s latest album Snake Handler, a combination made all the more affecting when coupled with Ramey’s emotive voice and raw, rough-and-tumble arrangements.

Meer sees Westerns as more of a concept than a straight ahead “band,” conveying an overall feeling of a particular time and place. Adding a vital element to Meer’s songwriting and production are photographs and design elements by Elliot Bamberger—evocative visuals that heighten the particular reminiscence for that era in SF. The project focuses on the aesthetics of SF through the lens of relationships, personally iconic locations in the city, as well as art and fashion. Its sound is grounded in the experiences of growing, weaving nostalgia and intimacy into a modern portrait. Western’s first single is “Wanted Your Love.” Westerns makes big sounds from California dreams.
