Finding a job in the arts can be challenging. The competition for these jobs can be pretty high and the job quantity is considerably low. However, if you’re dedicated to the craft and really want to pursue music as a full-time career, there are a few steps to take that can help you get to the next level.

Get a mentor
When you’re looking for a mentor, it’s important to ask someone who knows what they’re doing. If you go to a legal professional and ask for advice and mentorship in the music industry, you’re in trouble. Have someone mentoring you who has gone where you’re trying to go. It’s good to have an experienced veteran on your side because they can keep an eye for different opportunities that might suit you well.

Search the job boards
Even though job boards may seem tedious, there are lots of paid job boards that have a lot of industry positions that are not common to the general public. Applying to these positions on a consistent basis will put your name in front of the HR departments of arts companies and this is a great business move.

Get an internship
While internships may seem like a step backward, an internship always has the potential to become a job. If you’ve just completed a master’s degree in music education online and are looking for full-time work, consider applying to an internship program to get your foot in the door. Once you’re in, do an excellent job to the point that you’re so good they can’t ignore you. Even if you don’t end up staying where you complete your internship, it’s a great way to network and build connections in the industry that can lead you to the jobs you want.

Network
Join the email lists of different major music companies within the industry and find out whenever they’re hosting conferences, mixers or even happy hours. Don’t be afraid to get on a plane every now and then for a major conference or gathering. This shows your commitment level. These events are perfect opportunities for you to become familiar with the people you’d like to work with. It’s also great for them to get to know you as well. Brush up on proper networking etiquette before you go. Make sure to keep your business card on hand and look the part. First impressions are lasting impressions.

While these are great concrete steps to take when looking for a rewarding job within the industry, they don’t make up the quick and easy route. Some of these steps might take a few months or even years before they prove to become fruitful. Just don’t give up. With hard work, dedication and these tips, you’ll find an amazing position that suits you perfectly.
