DEREK HESS DOCU

Renowned Cleveland-based artist DEREK HESS has tested the waters of both the music and art world for over 20 years. Recognized internationally for his poster work with bands such as Pantera, Pink Floyd and Pearl Jam, as well as being featured brands like MTV, Vh1 and TLC, Hess’ art has been featured everywhere from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to the infamous Louvre in Paris.

After enriching the art and music world with his intricate and emotive drawing-based-art for over a decade, Derek Hess has finally translated his medium to film by way of his new documentary, Forced Perspective. This intimate self-portrait was directed by filmmaker Nick Cavalier and has already won awards at the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Beverly Hills Film Festival and many others. Forced Perspective isn’t just your average docu-story or even a biopic, but rather a journey through Hess’ struggle with alcoholism and bipolar disorder and how these demons affect his artwork. This exploration presents a voyeur into Hess’ personal life, revealing his process and philosophy. Forced Perspective showcases the evolution of a celebrated artist and his effect on music and culture while highlighting the link between creativity and mental illness.

BOSTON BALLET REPRISES MIKKO NISSINEN’S SWAN LAKE

Boston Ballet’s spring season kicks off with Mikko Nissinen’s Swan Lake, back by popular demand after a record-breaking world premiere in October 2014. Described by Robert Greskovic of The Wall Street Journal as “artful” and “luminous,” the timeless classical masterpiece features choreography by Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen after Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov and costumes and sets by award-winning designer Robert Perdziola. Boston Ballet welcomes Gonzalo Garcia, principal dancer with New York City Ballet (NYCB), as a guest artist. He will perform Prince Siegfried with Boston Ballet principal dancer Misa Kuranaga on April 29 and 30. Mikko Nissinen’s Swan Lake runs April 29–May 26 at The Boston Opera House. Due to the high-ticket demand, an additional performance has been added on May 25 at 7:30 pm.

“While Swan Lake is more than 100 years old, it has truly timeless power and is probably the most beloved classical ballet in the world,” explains Mikko Nissinen, Boston Ballet Artistic Director. “With so many sold out performances last season, I am thrilled to bring it back this year and to give audiences more opportunities to see Swan Lake and for the Company to dance it.”

LITTLE SCREAM NEW SINGLE

Today, Little Scream brings us “The Kissing,” the third single from Cult Following. The song builds slowly to showcase a blazing guitar and vocal solo and features TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone as the voice of a Magic 8 Ball with the power to give eerily specific answers.

In their premiere of the track, Consequence of Sound wrote:
What opens as a dejected acoustic track is slowly laced with bold rage through the first pair of verses. It’s there in the beating percussion, the suddenly ringing guitar strums, and the heavy yet contained chaos of the choruses. But underneath all the dark coatings is the all too frustratingly real damage of failed love, echoed in the disconsolate harmony provided by TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone on the phrase, “It’s time to stop doing some things in the rain/ Especailly the kissing.”

KLAUS JOHANN GROBE RELEASES NEW VIDEO

Klaus Johann Grobe return with their second wondrous album Spagat der Liebe on May 6th (out on the excellent Trouble In Mind Records), and a new track and video for album track Geschicten aus erster Hand has emerged this week ahead of the new release.

Driven by an organic yet metronomic beat aligned with synth, chant-like vocals and a monstrous funky bass, this is some seriously bum-waggling electro-freak goodness. All aiming towards a certain kind of hypnosis, particularly as the sleeping pill echo-heavy vocals cycle over the locked grooves the pair throw down.

“GULLFIRE”

In early 2008, age 18, Space Dimension Controller (R&S, Clone, Royal Oak) made his first album in his bedroom in Belfast, now set for a release on 27th May 2016 via Ninja Tune. Crunchy, tattered and enjoyably odd – “Orange Melamine” is a lovingly produced and deeply personal album that laces supernatural sounds and translucent synths with a sense of overflowing harmony. Washed in reverb and draped in hiss, the album draws influence from the old VHS tapes handed down to Space Dimension Controller from his older brother and cousins, as well as artists like Boards of Canada, Brian Eno and William Basinski.

WALLEATER ‘CAN YOU FEEL MY LOVE?’

Walleater return after their 2015 release, I/II, with two new songs that sound familiar while moving the band into more immediate waters. The band’s subtle shifts in sound are effortless and once again it’s that simplicity, that clear vision that separates Walleater from their peers. Call it whatever you will, Walleater are operating naturally at their own pace and in their own space.

With the tour underway, the live video depicts what to expect when TWRK and OG Maco join forces and push the energy level at the show to full throttle. They also have created an interactive game further expanding on all the fun and spirit of their party anthem (link below). Having completed a sold out European Tour and releasing several projects including 2016’s fan favorite The Lord Of Rage mixtape, it comes as no surprised the 2015 XXL Freshman alum, OG Maco, is ready to light up stages across the US.

FANCY DIAMONDS NEW VIDEO

Spring means the first robin, the first crocus, and – on April 18th, 2016 – the first video from trending Saskatoon party band, Fancy Diamonds, as they release a bizarrely entertaining gem in support of the EP, Sparkle Party, and the upcoming tour of the same name. Wearing their trademark blue tuxedoes, the 4 bearded members of Fancy Diamonds (Dylan Evans, Brodie Mohninger, Keegan Stretch, and Skyler Cafferata) have an infectious good time performing their way through the kinetic, surreal world of the video for the song, “Rocknrollin”, the first single release from their debut EP, Sparkle Party. Over 6 months in the making, and produced by EYECATCHER Video, the mind-bending two-and-a-half minute mini-movie is chock full of odd details and retro visual effects. Repeated viewings may be needed to take in everything but, since the song is also a catchy “ear worm”, that works out perfectly! So, on April 18th, 2016, join the fun-loving fools in Fancy Diamonds by checking out the “Rocknrollin” video and, once that has whet your appetite for the pure fun this band embodies, you will also want to catch them live during their “Sparkle Party” tour of the prairies, May 5th to 14th.

PHORIA “EVERYTHING BETA”

A voice appears out of a sound: a golden shape, a texture, a mixture of sunlight and sculpture. Music as spectral as this makes you lose yourself in the right way; deep in sound and light. Imagine the music of Sigur Ros, or James Blake, or Aphex Twin, but travelling somewhere else instead. As you do, pay attention as your eyes and ears adjust: open up, come alive.

LEWIS DEL MAR REVEALS VIDEO FOR DEBUT SINGLE “LOUD(Y)”

The video was filmed with a 16mm film camera and captures the essence of a day in the life of Lewis Del Mar. Kicking off in Rockaway, the visual follows Danny, Max and their crew on a rambunctious journey of NYC’s outer boroughs; debauchery with a sunrise nightcap. Declared “a clattering, profane, mixed media anthem” by The New York Times, “Loud(y)” reached #1 on Hype Machine, #3 on the Spotify Viral 50 chart, was hailed as one of iTunes/Apple Music’s ‘Best Alternative Songs of 2015’ and made SIRIUSXM Alt Nation’s ‘Songs To Know For 2016’ list. THE REV VIDEO “TESTIFY”

The ” Rev” is an innovative recording artist signed to Noel Music Group LLC, formerly known as ChristLine Entertainment Inc, which started in 2005. The Rev (Jean G Noel) was born in Haiti and immigrated to the US when he was 10 years old. His love for all genres of music influenced him in junior high school to be part of a local rap group called The Mixed Tribe. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, but moved to Philadelphia, PA, during his senior year in high school. As an artist, The Rev believes that true music is both spiritual and inspirational. In essence, the sound and lyrics come together to form a symphony that can either carry a positive or negative connotation. Thus, the Rev uses his creativity and philosophy of music to continue create songs that are both relational and spiritual.

BIG CITY BRIAN WRIGHT COVERS WAYLON JENNINGS

Big City Brian Wright dreamed of doing only two things with his life, flying airplanes and singing country music. That’s what he loves and that’s what he does. Taking the traditional route of creating music for the masses is NOT what he does. He has a unwavering dedication for revealing the truth in his lyrics, good or bad. “I refuse to use an idea or rhyme because it fits or sounds cool. And what I say sometimes leaves the pros questioning my choices. But, what I do is real. Reality is not always perfect.” And often-times he ends up combining his passions in song because of his “write it like you live it” approach. “This is the life I live, so this is the music I make. If I didn’t have a job or a house and was partying in fields with girls and making out in the river, I guess I’d write those kinds of songs, but I doubt anybody does that” says the native Georgian.

THE MYSTERY LIGHTS @ ROLLING STONE

In an era when the city kvetches that there are no good NYC bands, when half of the music scene has split for sunny California, the Mystery Lights are an anomaly. Not only did these bold young men reverse the direction – optimistically migrating east against the tide from the west coast, but they also landed in the wormy apple to immerse themselves in the action and diversity of New York City. They all share an apartment in Ridgewood, Queens – the basement of which they’ve converted into a makeshift rehearsal space. Betting against the odds to live the archetypical 20th century downtown musician lifestyle in 2016, though inevitably further east of the bridge, they also play with the kind of conviction, immediacy, and raw power of their mighty ancestors – from the Velvets to the Voidoids and beyond. The Mystery Lights are living proof that vital contemporary music, in this case real-deal rock’n’roll, can still be dreamed, constructed, and performed in the Empire City.

RITA WILSON X CHICAGO TOUR

Following the release of her second, self-titled album and songwriting debut, garnering praise for her “sweet, lightly smoky voice (USA Today)” that conveys the ability to “address life’s issues in practical language and tunes that have strong melodic hooks (The New York Times)”, Rita Wilson announced today that she will support iconic rock band Chicago for 10 dates on their Summer tour. The concert tour will span the West Coast, including a two-night run at Saratoga’s Mountain Winery.

The announcement comes on the heels of a successful residency at the renowned Café Carlyle in New York City and expands on Wilson’s already-announced dates at venues including the Nashville and Chicago locations of City Winery. The New York Times praised Wilson’s captivating live show, “[If you] closed your eyes at certain moments you could imagine you were cruising down a Southern California highway in the early 1970s. Sandwiched between the music of Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne on the car radio was a promising new voice whose sound fit right in with theirs.”
