“TABERNACLE”

Just one week following the release of his “deeply autobiographical” new single, “Tabernacle,” Royce 5’9 partnered with MTV Asia and BET Jams today to deliver the visual for the S-1 and J Rhodes produced single. The song recounts what Royce calls the most significant day of his life, the day he met Eminem following a live performance in his hometown of Detroit which he struggled through just hours after finding out his grandmother was in a fatal car accident and his girlfriend was in labor with his first son.

“I learned a lot this day,” Royce shares at the end of the song. “I learned that the universe has this way of balancing itself out… I learned that God is real.”

YAWL ANNOUNCES DEBUT LP

Colorado rapper, Ancient Mith and German producer Dot are the hip-hop group, Yawl. Together, they are about to drop something truly extraordinary with their debut album, A Pile to Keep, A Pile to Burn on Berlin based label, Anette Records. On the 14-track album, which will be available on May 5, Ancient Mith tackles subjects like heart break, remorse, angst, personal growth, and the subtleties there in–over Dot’s equally brooding, self-reflective beats.

The first single/video, “Woah,” questions the importance of distraction in the digital age. The sparse, well placed lyrics mirror the minimalistic production. “Raw Sugar” and “Wild Fires” highlight the hip-hop background of both artists, while other tracks showcase the blues/folk influence. The electronica sound of “Ships” and the emotion of “An Empty Field To Bury Lovers” are far from the typical alternative rap record.

EERIE WANDA (FEATURING MEMBERS OF JACCO GARDNER) PREMIERE LOVELY ANIMATED VIDEO FOR “I AM OVER HERE”

Eerie Wanda is marked by Marina’s sepia-toned songs, sung in a dreamy tenor and based around timeless melodies and arrangements. The songs stick to a classic formula, evoking a warm summery nostalgia and drawing comparisons to Angel Olsen, Broadcast, & the tuneful dynamics of Buddy Holly. Her voice is as central as anything else to the album’s success; it’s a two-toned, barely-accented gem of sweetness and melancholy, a distant cousin (somehow) to both Hope Sandoval and “I Am the Cosmos”-era Chris Bell. Tadic’s voice is compelling and consistent throughout the album, both sturdy and sympathetic, the ideal vehicle to carry the band’s often-ornate brocades of sound.

Only a week after releasing album track+video “A Final Hello,” Toronto’s Hooded Fang share another taste of their forthcoming album with “Impressions.” “You know in E.T., how when he came down, everyone aside from a few got scared and paranoid and basically ruined what could have been a beautiful mutual learning relationship?” the band explains to Consequence of Sound. “This song is about those types of encounters. When people come from a different place and get treated awfully out of fear, jeopardizing possibilities of positivity. This song is written about the visitors that get shunned, and what a loss that is for everybody.”

GRATEFUL DEAD JULY 1978: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS

In the history of Grateful Dead performances, 1978 is widely praised as one of the group’s finest years. It was certainly one of the busiest with the band playing more than 80 shows, including a trio of historic dates at the Gizah pyramids in Egypt, as well as releasing its tenth studio album, Shakedown Street.

The band’s next major boxed set focuses on five unreleased shows from July of that epic year and marks the first official release of master recordings from the long lost “Betty Boards.” Among the sonic treasures found on this 12-CD set are three soundboard recordings from July 1, 3, and 5 that have never been in circulation, even between the most diligent tape collectors. In addition, the set also marks the official debut of the Dead’s first-ever performances at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, two shows that are also highly sought-after by Dead Heads.
