LOUDWIRE AWARDS MASTODON’S “ASLEEP IN THE DEEP”

Loudwire, among Hard rock’s leading online destinations has just published their Year End Best Of 2015 lists and have named Mastodon’s “Asleep In The Deep” the #1 of the 10 Best Metal Video Of The Year 2015. Loudwire announced: “Mastodon are truly in a league of their own, not only creating music that beckons labeling them as their own genre, but crafting brilliant music videos like “Asleep in the Deep.” The video was released this year, but the song comes off the band’s 2014 record, Once More ‘Round the Sun. In this video, a cat leaves home and stumbles upon a weird, blacklit world full of cute little demon creatures. After drinking from a saucer, the furry feline undergoes a psychedelic transformation and has all sorts of hallucinations. The pacing of the video complements the trance-like song, resulting in the Best Metal Video of 2015.”

SHAWN O’SULLVIAN STREAM THE FIRST TRACK VIA RESIDENT ADVISOR

Shawn O’ Sullivan marks his return to Shifted’s Avian imprint with a four track EP under his 400ppm alias.

Following on from 2013’s Non Nocere, the New Yorker pairs trademark stripped back drum programming with heady, warping drones and frenetic sequencing. Even at full throttle, careful attention to detail lends the productions a degree of musicality oft missing from contemporary Techno. Subtle nods to IDM feature, and references to O’Sullivans work with Katie O’Sullivan as Further Reductions remain in the form of spacious verb and fluid atmospherics, but the focus is undeniably on the dance floor.

MALCOLM HOLCOMBE SET TO RELEASE ‘ANOTHER BLACK HOLE’ FEBRUARY 12, 2016

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Malcolm Holcombe, whose “heartfelt baritone” (NPR) delivers “haunted country, acoustic blues and rugged folk” (Rolling Stone), will release his 14th studio album, Another Black Hole (Gypsy Eyes Music), February 12, 2016.

Produced by Grammy-winning producer and engineer Ray Kennedy and Brian Brinkerhoff, Another Black Hole features Holcombe’s rasping vocals and bright, percussive guitar accentuating his insightful lyrics. “It is Malcolm’s perception of the world that make his songs hit you like a gunpowder blast. His gruff and tough delivery is a primordial power full of grit, spit and anthropomorphic expression,” says Kennedy.

LEGENDARY AMERICAN BAND RETURNS WITH FIRST NEW ALBUM IN MORE THAN 15 YEARS

Violent Femmes have announced details of their eagerly awaited new LP. WE CAN DO ANYTHING arrives via [PIAS] on Friday, March 4th.

Violent Femmes’ ninth studio album and first full-length collection in more than 15 years, WE CAN DO ANYTHING is among the most provocative and playful in the legendary trio’s remarkable canon. As the album’s title makes plain, the band – singer/songwriter/guitarist Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, and drummer Brian Viglione – remains as intrepid and fearless as ever before, traversing genre and emotion via their immediately identifiable, still utterly idiosyncratic, mash of rambunctious folk, minimalist punk, cubist blues, cosmic jazz, and backwoods rock ‘n’ roll.

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL THANK THEIR MUSICAL BROTHERS & SISTERS JOINING THE PLAY IT FORWARD EODM CAMPAIGN

In the aftermath of the horrific and senseless terrorist attacks on Paris on November 13, 2015—in which so many innocent lives were taken at that evening’s Eagles Of Death Metal show at Le Bataclan—it was none other than Duran Duran who reached out with an immediate and sincere act of musical solidarity: In response to a fan-led campaign to push Eagles Of Death Metal’s cover of Duran Duran’s classic “Save A Prayer” to #1 in the UK, Simon LeBon tweeted that the new romantic icons would donate their share of royalties from the track to charity.

In the weeks that followed, Eagles Of Death Metal asked its musical family to extend the victims of the Paris attacks the same kindness and compassion that everyone from the members of U2 to the French authorities had shown the band—to join the Play It Forward EODM Campaign. EODM asked artists the world over to cover “I Love You All The Time” from its current album Zipper Down. For every cover sold, the band pledged to donate 100% of its publishing income to The Sweet Stuff Foundation, the non-profit organization founded in 2013 by EODM co-founder Joshua Homme to provide assistance to musicians and their families in times of need, as well as musical education and gear for the next generation. Participating artists were also asked to donate the money generated from sales of the song to the charity.

BEST TRACKS OF 2015

It’s this time of the year again: Best of lists are back! You hate them, right? Well, don’t be such a grinch. This best tracks list’s only purpose is to dispense a tiny dose of what’s been, once again, a brilliant year for musical creation, with plenty more than just dozens of top-notch EPs and albums.

Your favourite track didn’t make it into our selection? A 30-track list is too narrow to stick them all? We know this, don’t worry. Don’t forget these lists aren’t meant to demean absentees. There’d be no point in turning this yearly celebration into an autocratic ranking of supposed tastefulness.

MURALS “LONG BRIDGE” VIA THE FADER

Formed nearly 10 years ago while in high school the band now known as Murals (Evan Blum, Jacob Weaver, Rob Monsma) have traveled a long road to their debut Full Length LP. After some dips and turns the three core members have landed back in their home town of Louisville, KY. They write record and live in a house on a hill in the not so swank part of town – the type of place that acid trips and all day jam sessions go hand in hand. The results are an ever present body of slow churning psychedelic folk that wouldn’t be so surprising in your hippie dad’s record collection or buried deep in the crates of your headiest record store.

QUIN VIDEO PREMIERE

Flirting with pop, electronic music, and RnB is newcomer Quiñ, a singer/songwriter from Pasadena, California, poised to turn heads with her effortless style of self-described Fantasy Soul Music. Says Quin, “I named it Fantasy Soul Music because naturally this is the music my soul sings, and Fantasy because that’s where my imagination gets its inspiration.” Filling the room with her sun-drenched vocals, Quiñ soars over Rich Skillz’ hazy production. Atop a stack of dream-sequenced synths, she sings “Last thing I felt was the sunset / the last thing I saw was the dawn in the your eyes / last thing I said was ‘I got that / and I will be back for you, wait until I rise.'”

Said NPR of the opening track, “Led by [vocalist Kat] Katz, ‘Not A Daughter’ is from the twenty-seven-minute Arc, a relentlessly sludgy and doomy three-track EP from a band mostly known for delivering digital distress in twenty seconds or less. Since joining the band for 2009’s Agorapocalypse, Katz has proven to be the most feral of the three AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED vocalists. Here, her full-throated shrieks push and pull [guitarist Scott] Hull’s Crowbar-thick grooves and mean MC5 riffs. It’s as if ANb was always meant to be the scummiest rock ‘n’ roll band alive.”

IVY NATIONS NEW SINGLE

“It’s about control. A possessive relationship. Two actors a) possessor; b) the possessed (controlled partner). One person yielding control over the other long after the relationship has ended. An addiction, that eventually paralyses both actors. The result, an inability to truly love another. The possessed partner takes over the role of the possessor over time. An emphasis on insecurities (in the possessed), that fuels paranoia. An inability to forgive, to accept ones fate, that is, bound by fears, loss and anxiety. Lusting over the possessed partner. An unhealthy desire to be with them at any cost.”
